BMW 6 Series 640D M Sport
Discussion
I currently drive a 2013 (owned since 2014) Hyundai i40 Tourer which I use for commuting to work and driving to Spain covering about 18K a year, I'm looking to change it sometime in the near future and one car I like is the BMW 6 Series 2 door (don't want anymore doors). Hyundai has been pretty reliable with just a few parking sensor issues and returns 55mpg all day long (record is just 16 miles shy of 1000 miles on one tank full.
Something like this one is an my radar https://www.burford-carsales.co.uk/used-bmw-6-seri...
and is about where I want it to be pricewise.
Having only owned one BMW in my life (E30 Touring Lux) I could do with some real advice regarding reliability, how close to the 51mpg does it get and general ownership issues.
I have no kids and no real requirement to use the back seats except to transport the dogs around occasionally - there Chihuahua's so I guess the seats will accommodate them.
I have a much modified Mazda MX5 ND for when the sun shines so it just needs to do the day to day stuff.

Nice car, I really like it in red. Most are black/white/silver.
I don't think you will get 50mpg if you want to enjoy the engine, id plan around 40mpg, a bit less if you have a heavy foot, but it doesn't sound like you do. I have the later 3.0d engine which has a 60mpg combined figure, its BS.
I don't see why it wouldn't be any less reliable than the next car but every cost is going to be way higher than your i40, from fuel, service, tyres, parts, insurance. Its a performance luxury car and when things break it wont be cheap.
For reference, you can get a 2018 530d (not as sexy but has the next generation interior + 2 year warranty remaining) for about the same price as the 2016 640d. The drive will be pretty much the same, depends how important the looks are to you.

Hi,
Excellent choice - I bought my 2017 640d 2 years ago and love it.
it's much more economical than my previous 2006 320d was.
Although I can't tell you in MPG what it returns, I can tell you in monetary terms. It costs me approximately £35 to cover 240 miles (motorway driving).
A local trip - 7 miles through London traffic lasting approx. 30 mins doesn't really move the fuel needle at all.
Please note however, if you put it into sport mode, although it goes like a train and you will love it, it will drink a lot more fuel.
But honestly, it's the best car I've ever driven and a real head turner too, you'll love it.

Thanks for the info, I don't want a black one (too difficult to keep clean) and I don't want a white one (just had 5 years with a white car) so red or blue or silver/grey is my preferred choice only real criteria is not a white interior, as I make products that contain die and it gets everywhere.
