I recall reading a report that 911s were appreciating in value, but didn’t pay much attention at the time.
Today I renewed the insurance on my 996 C2 Cab, and the comparison sites valuation of the car were incredible. One site had the valuation at £21350, the one I used had it at £19675. I used to insure it for £14k, and had bought the car for £15500 6 years ago.
A google search only showed one car comparable to mine for sale at £20k from a dealer.
Do I finally have a car that has not depreciated in value? Or are the valuations very optimistic.

I gather the trend seems to be upward for the 996. Seemed crazy they had got down to the sub £10k mark for the most tired examples. That said (despite the trade trying to persuade us in their adverts) I can’t see the water cooled generation of 911’s experiencing what the air cooled have, there are just too many 996’s manufactured but they seem to be gaining affection for there ageing and what with each new iteration of the model becoming more “assisted” by technology I’m not surprised valued are increasing. A low miles/owner amber lense gen 1 996 would be a wise investment if you could persuade an owner in the know to sell!
I’m surprised how well 996s have aged looks wise; I used to think they were an abomination, but now, like lots of others, think they look great: compact with soft lines and a great sounding exhaust note to boot. Most colours, aside from guards red, look great too.
However, I have a couple of friends with them and even without the rust issues of me and my pals aircooled cars they still cost more on average to run than our old cars: sunroof problems, electrical issues and both have needed expensive engine rebuilds.
Glad they are getting the appreciation they deserve.

This ^^. They leak oil, but rarely just let go.I know of three 996s that have gone bang. The latest one was quoted £17K for a rebuild by his local OPC, had it done by an indie for around 11K. It had covered just 37K miles from and he’d owned it from new.
Mine's on nearly 140k and hasn't gone pop, it had an IMS replacement 5 or 6 years ago, and other than a slight weep from the rear main oil seal it's fine and pulls like a train.
PopPopBangBangs 996 was on nigh on 300k when it he had it rebuilt, and there's a fair few 996 that see 200k or so without needing a rebuild.

Anecdotally at least, it does seem that garage queens are the engines that let go most.
I wouldn't buy a sub 30k mile 996 , certainly not with the price premium that'll come with it. Mine has 115k miles and still going strong, and i picked it up cheap. What's not to like, especially with its compact size, nice hydraulic steering, sensible gear ratios. But i think that they will always be the cheapest 911 you can buy, at least for the next 10 years.
