Not a long story !

A friend has purchased a “Valuable silk “ large Iranian rug

Now it was sold to him by a London Based Iranian .

Things that don’t make sense

1. If it was as valuable as claimed . It would not have been sold for the price accepted

2 . A little research tells me that in Belgium ? There are the best factories on earth making high end fakes . With technology that can fool most people

3 . The silk feels wrong . . It Rolls ok . But not the best “folder “ which I always thought is the best way to keep them etc

4 . The metal tag etc looks weird

5. The edging looks ok . No real evidence of it been added etc

It’s a nice rug. Ok , bloody massive ! But something makes me “itch” about it .

Will post pics ASAP

If its been suitably priced as a 'rug' I don't see the problem.

If hes purchased a 'special' rug he knows nothing about.. He's probably been robbed.

If that label was put on in Iran, it would not have western numerals.

It would if it was manufactured in Iran with a view to selling internationally. Also, Roman numerals are widely used in Iran.

For what he paid it’s fine . It’s the “story “ from the seller that does not add up

He thinks this is a £30k plus high end hand made silk rug

I still have my doubts !

My parents used to collect them. I'm not an expert but that looks machine made.

Hand made in that they used a hand cranked machine, maybe.

Genuine off topic question. You say "Iranian" rug. I would still say Persian rug. Who is right? I think I am, because I would call the exotic looking cat, sitting on the Persian rug, a Siamese cat, not a Thai cat.

I know a little but my advice is to take it somewhere that can verify it to be sure. No real other way.

The tags do look simialr to the ones I used to sell but it's been a while to be honest.

You can 'crack' it open (pile side up) and you should be able to see the knots. Machine made rugs will not have these knots. This will tell you nothing of the value but might hint as to if it is hand made.

It might be a wool and silk mix rug. From memory 10-15% silk and the rest wool.

If new, it should smell of the oils in the wool, if it does have some wool of course.
