Hey Guys,

The rear oil seal on my FD3 has gone and its dropping oil all the time. THe clutch has also started to slip, could partly be down to this or the fact its been in since new which Im not sure about.

Anyways, I am looking at both the Exedy Stage 1 organic and the Competition Clutch Stage 2. (they dont offer a stage 1 for the FD)

Does anyone have any experience of either in an RX7 or indeed Competition Clutch in any other car? I know Exedy is a well established brand but I dont know too much about Competition Clutch....

Any help would be appreciated!

I have to ask why you want to upgrade the clutch, the original Mazda one lasted 20+ years and was presumably fit for purpose?

What are you hoping to achieve with the upgrade?

Competition clutches are normally more heavily sprung and feature a more aggressive friction material so will be heavier at the pedal, less progressive and harder to slip.

I have a Competition Clutch stage 4 clutch in my race car, which is a production-spec engine and only 130 bhp. I used to have a standard Exedy clutch which lasted very well considering the abuse it got. The Competition Clutch is so far very good, though it is very heavy and grabby and not something I would want on a road car, let alone something you'll be driving around town. Do be careful when looking at uprated clutches because of this.

Hey guys thanks for the replies.

I'm only looking at minor upgrades due to eventually probably looking for a little more power. I don't want anything crazy, I've had stage 3/4 clutches before on cars and not been a fan.

However from what I read the stage 1 from Exedy and Stage 2 from CC are pretty tame and not far from standard bar a slightly stiffer clutch pedal. They are both organic so should have at least some slip.

I'm just unfamiliar with the CC brand.

I have a Stage 2 Competition Clutch in my MX5 turbo (around 210 bhp).

The kit itself was of good quality and complete with both bearings and alignment tool.

Prior to installation I had the flywheel resurfaced. The first drive was "concerning" as the clutch shuddered and grabbed badly, to the extent that we thought we would need to drop the box again. However, we were confident that the installation was correct and so I persevered with the recommended 500 mile break-in. It rapidly improved and, when moving, is little different to stock. Where it is different is in stop start traffic or low speed manoeuvres as it does not like to slip and has a much stronger "on / off" action.

I'm very happy with it for my application but for a daily I think it would be a bit of a pain. Unless you're considerably increasing engine power, I would (personally) fit either another Mazda or OEM equivalent.

I have a stage one exedy in my RX8 and can't tell much difference from stock tbh, have a stage 2 competition in my WRX and that takes more pressure and it seems to release quite abruptly.

I've got a stage 3 on my Supercharged Civic (357bhp) and it's been great. Had it on almost 2 years now, not too bitey and fine in traffic.

I'm running about 320hp on twins on my RX-7. When my clutch went I replaced it with standard Mazda OEM, I'm fairly sure it was just worn out as the car is much easier to drive on the new one. So far the new one has been fine, zero slip, so I'd be inclined to stick with standard unless you're going for major power hike or need to clutch kick for drifting or something :-)
