The missus is spending £200 a month on fuel and losing about £350 a month on depreciation so considering going electric or hybrid.

Current car is a BMW SUV which she uses for daily commute and gets 30mpg. I asked if she was interested in electric and she would consider it.

Don't need massive range, but with a 40 mile round trip, it would need to be able to do 40 miles full electric in the winter time. I can't see her entertaining the Hyundai Kona or anything like that as she is a bit of a badge snob. Ideally, a well specced SUV type car would fit the bill for her, and something relatively premium, such as BMW etc.....Love the Jag i-Pace but not really good value at £70k and defeats the purpose of saving on the fuel to plough it all into the purchase price and save nothing in the end.

Is there anything in the sub £50k, or ideally sub £40k price bracket that would fit the bill? Doesn't have to be brand new as such, and would also consider a lease if the price was right.

Its the first time I've looked into this type of car, so a bit lost right now. Will do some more research but in the meantime, just wondering what suggestions/recommendations are out there?

If it's only 40 miles any EV will do that journey every day summer and winter.

Outside Tesla and the i-Pace the only "premium" mainstream EV is the BMW i3, a decent car but a bit marmite styling-wise

Golf-e?

Pick up a year old one for about £25k

I know she's a badge snob but the new Leaf is very good.

i3 which I think looks superb

Being electric you will still lose a fair amount in depreciation but zero fuel cost and minimal electricity cost only doing 40 miles per day.

I was doing 120 miles per day in my Leaf so charging at home once a day and it added approx. £30 per month to my electrical bill.

Also mine never went wrong in 75k miles+. It was even on its original brake pads because of the regenerative braking.

Thanks for the replies. I think the i3 is a great car, just a little small. The leaf has a bit more space and is a good shout, just unsure if she would like it. I personally think its great and ticks a lot of boxes.

Any thoughts on hybrid cars as that might open a few doors? The full electric cars are few and far between and the moment!

Just stumbled across this. Soon to be released, full electric Volvo.

It should tick the boxes ok, just don't know how much it would cost yet.

Wow - keep bumping my own thread here but looking at what is coming out for full electric in 2019, my mouth is watering! Over 15 new cars, Honda, Volvo, Audi, Merc etc....everyone jumping on the bandwagon. The Audi looks quite nice - the Merc on the otherhand - looks like the designer has been sniffing glue when he put pen to paper lol

The Jag XJ will probably be too expensive but my god, it looks amazing. Aston Martin getting in on the act too, with an incredibly long bonnet!?

Does your wife want suv fir elevated driving position?

My wife likes our xc60 for this reason. She hated the Octavia, but really likes the i3, as it has elevated position.

Nothing hybrid is going to do 40 miles on a single charge. 20 miles, maybe, so if she can charge both ends of a 40 mile round trip then something like a Mercedes C350e or BMW 330e. Otherwise she'll be using petrol too. Obviously still better than 30mpg by a country mile though.

I've got an original shaped Leaf. It's the best car for commuting I've ever owned. Copes with 50 miles a day all year round with loads left to spare. The new Leaf is even better.

Maybe look at the KIA Niro plug-in hybrid. I know the badge is a bit non-premium, but these are very nice cars.

Didn't realise that it was a bit higher, and yes, she does like that higher seating effect. Might take a nosey at one

Best commuting car is some accolade. What are the key things you like about it?

I would have thought you would lose more money by swapping cars than you would save. You will lose a chunk of money in depreciation as well. What is she spending on fuel each day? £6?

Aren’t they. The modern Kias and Hyundai’s are brilliant. I was in a new I30 the other day and my lasting impression is just how much nicer it was than a mk7 golf. I’m a big fan and Korea is leading the way with battery tech.

.
C350e doesn't get more than 12-13 miles in summer. 330e would get 17-18 miles.

Prius PHEV rated at 39 miles. Real world range is Max of 33-35 miles.

I didn't make it clear in the 1st post but a change of car is pending anyway, which is why electric is coming into the equation. It's not solely to reduce fuel costs, more of a 'let's look at electric' as part of the change process. But I guess we need to look at electric car depreciation as part of that. Fuel cost is about £9 per day for the commute, £50 a week total, so about £220 a month.

50 miles might do the trick. Seems like the phevs are mostly ruled out, bar the likes of prius and x5 that have been mentioned.

Ah well that makes sense. You need to get out your calculator and go through some numbers.

I would suggest waiting until later this year for the new GLE PHEV

The GLE will be the first car with a 100-kilometer (62-mile) range on a plug-in hybrid in the WLTP cycle.
