Either really, obviously mid winter is not a good time, but if it's a nice machine sensibly priced it should sell, just take a little longer.

Best time to buy private is late January when the Christmas credit card bill has just hit the mat and they're wondering how to pay it.

Best time to sell privately is late May/early June when it's just getting nice and everyone wants a bike again.

if you are looking to give up on bikes or just have a bike in your "collection" you want to be rid of then as soon as the weather turns nice is the time to sell.
if you are selling just because you want a change then its all the same really.
sell in the spring so you get a slightly bumped up price,but now you are looking to buy at the time when the price takes a jump up.
the only answer is to have lots of bikes .
