Commuter-workhorse recommendations?

Would be grateful for advice.
Need a commuter/workhorse.
150 miles a day Monday to Friday motorways and fast country lanes.
Must be diesel 30-40mpg acceptable
Preferably estate or large boot minimum
Around a 5k budget
Been looking at the 2.2 mondeo diesel titanium range, not sure as don’t know a whole lot about them.
