Vauxhall Insignia 1.8l - Noise while accelerating

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone could help me. I drive a Vauxhall Insignia (1.8 Petrol exclusiv 2011) and recently I’ve heard a very loud almost bell-like noise while accelerating. This happened once before a few months ago and I didn’t get it seen too but now it’s happened around 3/4 times in the last 2 weeks.

It stops as soon as I touch the brake but then when I come off the brake the sound begins again. It sound s like a metal bell being rung (constantly if that makes any sense). I have tried recording the noise but as soon as I try it stops!

If anyone has any idea about what this could be I would greatly appreciate any suggestions because it is really getting quite annoying now!

Does it make any difference if you take up play on the clutch pedal? Intermittent heavy knocks from the engine could be crank end float from a failed thrust washer allowing the crank to hit the block. The ringing nature of the sound could also correspond to piston slap, which also fits the throttle sensitivity you describe, but that tends to repeat which I don't think is happening if I understood you correctly.

Not sure why you mean by take up play on the clutch but while I’m changing gears the noise disappears so it is only while I’m accelerating. I have noticed however that if I was to stop the car, turn the engine off and leave the car for 20/30mins then start driving again the noise doesn’t happen for the rest of that journey.

It’s a very random noise in terms of when it occurs and how long it lasts.

When you say it stops when you touch the brake, do you mean even if you keep your right foot on the accelerator or do you mean if you come off the accelerator it is still making the noise until you brake?

Yeah sorry, to be more clear, if I come off the accelerator and let the car coast I can still hear the noise but if I come off the accelerator and then on to the brake pedal the noise stops until I release the brake pedal. Even the slightest bit of pressure on the brake pedal silence the noise immediately until I release the brake.

I would be thinking drive shaft/drive shaft support bearing/hub area then.

Okay thanks for the response, I’ll mention it next time I pop into my local garage. It’s super frustrating how random the noise can be though lol, whenever I attempt to record it I hear nothing. Thanks again!
