Queen's speech today, how embarrassing.

I must confess, bearing in mind it's 2005, I'm pretty embarrased to be ruled by a monarchy. I mean, technically the Queen can sack the Government. She signs new laws and has a huge amount of legal authority. Why is this? Because she was born of royal ascent. If you were an alien that just arrived from planet Bongo, it would be pretty hard to get your head round such a state of affairs. It would probably be viewed as some sort of evolutionary throw-back to ants or bees.
I've got no problem having the Royal family as some sort of tourist / charity figureghead, but they (well the Queen) have got 'real' authority.

Queen did not choose to be queen, ergo she is a servant not a power seeker like er...all politicians and democratically elected mediocrites.
The Queen is all part of the checks and balances to stop the concentration of power and thus risk of a runaway dictatorship in this country. Please see how Hitler and Mussolini got into power - had to remove the King in order to do so.
Supposedly the commons/lords and judiciary should be very seperate, note how the labour party has fixated on undermining the independence of other bodies in its bid to bring us the new world order.
Don't let bit of petty jealousy cloud these important facts. Its not like she has a life that anyone would actually choose for themselves. God save the Queen.

Get your point old chap, however a President would probably not be voted for (they aren't in Europe) just appointed (by a mojority "vote"
by the ruling party...so thats as democratic as slimeball bLAIR would want it. I'd rather have a figurehead that is not involved in politics than a political nonentity who'd sign anything (see the present german president, a burocrat who has done nothing ever for germany but will blindly sign anything the present socialist/green government will put in front of him)....

Frankly I think our queen is great!
Who cares about the embarassments the family cause. They're ordinary people at the end of the day and everyone makes mistakes.
She brings in more money in tourism than she spends and I feel quite proud to have a royal family still "ruling" our country.
It's called culture and its something that should never be lost.
I'm going to be non PC here and say: "God Save the Queen!"

Easy - take away all of her legal authority. Sure, she can bring in tourists and promote charities, but not be legally in charge of quarter of the world! Best to do it before she dies as well - I think the shallow gene pool have all ganged up on poor old Charlie. It's not his fault, but there is a reversal of Darwinism going on here somewhere!

Personally I'm getting tired of people saying they hate this country etc etc… you don't like it - you have to options. Get off your backside and try and do something about it, or leave.
I've read countless times on PH how people are going to go…. I've yet to see one put their money where their mouth is.
This is our country, it's not perfect, but it's ours - and I'm damn proud of our heritage.

Those countries such as Canada and Australia where the Queen is still head of state actually voted democratically to keep her that way. So you'll find a majority of people in favour of the Queen.....
.....and I doubt ol' Charlie will be King. More likely to be littl' Willie.

Using a bit of business sense here. They make more money in tourism than they spend.
So....in a logical sense, if you get rid of them, you don't make that profit and therefore less tourism and income into our economy.
So whether they are a bunch of scroungers or not, it makes sense to keep them!
show me figures which prove they make money and i'll review my opinion.
::edit:: i bet tourists will still flock to see round the Palaces etc regardless of whether there's actually anybody in them. give all the palaces to the National Trust and let them keep them

I would never want the Queen's job but it is vital to the heritage and to the safe control and operation of democracy in this country.
She has the potential to weald enormous power but if she chose to do so unilaterally she would be removed instantly. If however the populous made the mistake of electing a wolf in sheep's clothing who, once they have been democratically elected on one mandate, turned out to have a completely different agenda, the populous could urge the Queen to act on their behalf to intervene and effectively remove them from power.
Why else in the mid-nineties was there such a strong push (or as it an attempted putsch?) to remove the monarchy at a time when the socialists thought that they would be swept back into power under the coat tails of ‘New Labour’?
It’s almost a wonder that more haven’t seen this as a way to oust the present tyrant.
We have nuclear weapons, I'm glad that we do but I hope to God we never have to use them.
