After nearly eight months of blissfull ownership with the C4S I've just recieved a letter from Porsche to let me know the warranty runs out in July but they will happily give me another one for 800 quid. It'll be two years old in July and it's done 17K miles.
Is it worth it for piece of mind??

Yes. But get better value for money by doing more miles.

I have a dilemma at the moment. Extend my 996 Turbo warranty on my standard Turbo, or get the car modified by DMS & have no warranty.
I could get an X50 pack & a Porsche warranty, but thats very expensive.

So....490bhp & no warranty, or 420bhp & a Porsche warranty......

wax lyrical

- sounds like a recipe for disaster! Although TT engines are almost bullet proof, they CAN fail (see the US Rennlist forums for evidence).

So, you need to ask yourself...do you feel lucky?

...well.....do you PUNK!

Sorry - just love the 'Dirty Harry' films!

I've extended my warranty - and will likely do so again. I used it *a lot* during the first two years. So far I haven't needed to...but the backup when things go wrong is worth the "insurance premium".

"insurance premium".

that's exactly the way to look at it. anything goes wrong with these cars and you can look at the best part of £1000 leaving your wallet, so it's well worth the piece of mind. i had a fuel pump pack up on my first 911, but the warranty covered it. also unless you are lucky you will probably have rms problems. again warranty covers it. i had 3 rms failures on my c4s, but again, not my problem.... it's a no brainer...

I had RMS go on my 3 year old C4S, it was out of warranty by a year but was fixed FOC.
I think that if you make enough "noise" about it plus the fact its a well documented fully recognised problem then RMS should not cost you a penny until the car is well over 3 years old and they get much more stubborn about doing anything free or part free.

If you are out of the UK a lot could you possibly pick up the warranty on the continent cheaper?

I think of the warranty as "Engine Insurance". I have had an engine blow and it isn't a pleasant experience. £9K to replace if paying for it yourself - warranty will cover this unless you were badly behaved and mechanically over-revved.

But beware - when you do come to have a claim, the OPC will take great pleasure in telling you it is "only" the extended warranty and there are many, many things it does not cover.

I say you'd be not to renew the warranty!

Regards the commment that the extended warranty is not as good as the 'original' one, I am under the impression you get the same cover as before when extending?

The 2 year manufacturers warranty covers pretty much everything, even the sterio & stuff like that (obviously not wear & tear stuff)
The extended one is not as comprehensive, but still offers a very good level of cover.
A quick call into an OPC & a chat with the warranty guy is pretty useful, they will tell you the difference between the two are.

thats the impression they like to give when they are selling it to you. Different story when trying to make a claim and they tell you it is "only" the extended warranty that you have.

It can be a bit of a catch22 situation - in order to make a warranty claim you must take the car to an OPC for them to investigate and identify the problem. Once identified they will then decide if this is covered by extended warranty. If it is NOT then you have to pay for all the investigation time.

For example, in my case - major coolant leak,2L out overnight, every night. Not detected by OPC on pre-purchase inspection when warranty was issued.
Taken to OPC to fix thinking it will easily be covered by warranty (which states "Cooling System" - takes them 3 hours to dismantle car and find problem - a simple 3-way seal which leaks when the pressure drops. Simple things like seals are NOT covered by the warranty, regardless of how complex it is to find, so I was faced with a £600 bill - 3 hours to dismantle car, 50p for seal and 3 hours to reassemble. I was not a happy camper - fortunately OPC stepped up and took it on the chin as they also thought it was ridiculous - not Porsche GB, but the OPC paid for it.

2nd problem - emergency cutout (on clubsports) was randomly cutting out - even when moving!!! Maybe once or twice a month. Obviously a safety issue, so asked if it can be fixed under warranty - the answer was that the extended warranty does not fix intermittent faults, only those where the component has failed completely. I raised my point about safety, and this didn't matter Had to pay for the part and fix it myself to avoid it cutting out at 150mph on circuit and leaving me with no power, brakes or steering!!

So, no, the extended warranty is not the same as the original one - by a long way.

Just a small point of correction - if you have a fault then under the terms of the extended warranty you do not have to take it to an OPC fo diagnosis, you can use any reputable specialist - I always seem to use JZM. Yes if the inspection then shows that the item is not covered under the extended warranty then sorry but you have to pay the costs of investigation. However, if the cars bust then it needs to be fixed anyway so investigation work is essential and taking it to a non OPC will not cost you £100+ per hour. Furthermore, there is every chance that the inspecting garage will "lose" some of the cost of the investigation work under the bill for the repair(there's no chance of an OPC offering that sort of concession).

Just my 2 cents...

steve is of course correct, but it has to be an independent with a Porsche approved warranty inspector - few places have this, and there aren't any within 300 miles of me unfortunately.

Fair enough!

I am presently extending my initial 12 months used car warranty; do I still get a reduced level of cover in my case?

.......because I asked the service chap if the warranty cover would continue to be the same, and he said it would. If he was telling Porkies (pardon the pun) he deserves a kick up the rear poo chute.

Thanks

Martyn.
