Hi All,

An age old question that has probably been asked in one form or another 101 times before but... Looking some advice/thoughts.

I think I'm pretty much sold on the Hyundai Tucson for my next car. Unfortunately, I'm limited to petrol as my mileage from what I can tell doesn't cut it for a diesel (10k miles per year, 12.5 mile (mostly dual carriageway) daily commute and then home again).

I'm guessing the 1.6GDI will be grand for the daily commute but when loaded up with the wife, 2x kids, dog and all the fun stuff that come with the family is the GDI going to leave me lagging. I have to admit I do like a little bit of zip and although I'm very careful to stay within limits I do like to get to the limit pretty quickly and stay on it for as long as I can, overtaking and what not included.

I'm looking at a couple of early 2018 models, one is a GDI the other TGDI. There is roughly £3k of a difference price wise... The TGDI has 7k less miles which obviously adds to the price but it's also 300+ miles away from me so not the most straight forward to get to.

Main question is... Is the turbo worth an extra £3k? Or maybe more importantly is the standard 1.6GDI going to leave me with a hole in the floor where the accelerator should be???

Thanks,
.a

p.s. sorry about the ramblings above...

It's the extra torque that'll make the big difference, you'll be working the 1.6GDI more everywhere on every journey, I'd say test drive a 1.6GDI & see if it works for you.

It's a big car to be lugging around with only 120lb/ft of torque, but depending on your driving style you might only find it comes up short when you hit a steep hill

Cheers all. I’ve now seen a GDI automatic that ticks all the other boxes so I’m going to throw that in the mix and take it for a run this weekend. It’s a minefield when you know very little about cars and have been driving the same thing for the past 5 years so anything else is going to feel different. Unfortunately the current car is a 1.8 140bhp light-weight hatchback so it can move when it needs to. The Tucson will maybe feel a bit sluggish compared to this.

Hmmm....

The 1.6GDi is an absolute liability if you want to zip anywhere.......its ok for pootling round town, but on a m'way at 70, put your foot down, and nothing, total liability (and that was only one up). I'd only consider the TGDi (and i'd take it for a drive to check its got enough grunt) if petrol is the only option.

Thanks joust, I’ll hopefully get out tomorrow at some point for a look around. Is there any truth in the rumour that I should hold off until March to try and get a better deal after the new plates have been realised?

Also, I’m guessing that I’m going to struggle to get a punchy Petrol SUV of any sort nevermind just the Tucson, unless I go for a turbo? I’ve done my sums again with the mileage and it just doesn’t justify a diesel with DPF issues to consider (not overly worried about diesel price comparison to be honest) it’s more the repair cost of a bunged up DPF and whatever issues an underdriven diesel can make...

So turns out the GDI is slower than a meerkat pushing a shopping trolley, so that’s out. The TGDI options locally are just pushing me out of budget and I don’t think I can justify the increase.

Have seen a Kuga ST-Line in budget (<£18k). It’s only the 148bhp/177lbft but it might do the job. Tech is similar but different and boot space a bit smaller but from what I’ve read up on they are a decent drive.

Will take a nosey and see what’s what. Local ford dealer also offering new titanium with £2k extras for £23.5k on a 0% finance. I’m assuming this will be a monthly over 48 with a final 8-10k payment to keep.

This car buying malarkey isn’t as fun as I was hoping for...

If only I didn’t have mini people and dogs to worry about I could just enjoy splashing out on a very nice hatch...

Try to find a 180 Kuga it makes a big difference if you're looking for a bit of pace either that or get the 150 mapped.

Never thought about remapping. Guess it’s an option that could be a good shout.

Other options I’ve thought about are (maybe even more so with remapping an option)

1.4TSI Seat Ateca (there’s a 1.0TSI but I’m guessing that’s well below par/power).
1.5L Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Budget would cover a 2018 ‘nearly new’ with plenty of tech thrown in. Though I know very little about either so any opinions more than welcome.

If you can stretch to a Vignale 180 (most dealers will deliver to you for free) you won't regret it.

Use these as a comparison to your deal & maybe use these as bargaining chips to get a better deal.

The Vignale is an awesome looking piece of kit but definitely jumps too far above current budget. I think at an absolute stretch I could get to 20k but would definitely need to tick every box that I want/need.

Just got the wife a new car (mid Feb) and pushed that about 2.5k over budget which unfortunately has eaten into my budget. To be honest she wasn’t supposed to be getting a new one at all so technically she’s gone 11.5k into my budget but hopefully that will keep her happy for a bit.

There’s the option to consider a 2 year lease on approx £250pm scenario, which would give me a bit of time to add to the pot.

Cheers for the input. The remapping option is definitely something I’d consider, albeit if the insurance company don’t have issues with it.

I’ll maybe keep looking and see what way prices go come March. Also, I’m Northern Ireland based so options are a little more limited unfortunately.

It doesn't have to be a limitation I get cars transported to NI for around £400-500 depending on the pick up point so don't let that stop you from looking all over the UK also flights/ferries are cheap if you want to drive it home yourself.

I think I've found a cracking deal on a 2019 Titanium X 150 & it's not close to your 20k limit:

If you get the remap done by Mountune then the Warranty isn't affected & the insurance company will normally be okay all of which can be done before the car is delivered.

A decent estate should be just as spacious and you tend to get more for your money what with handling, performance, economy etc. I was surprised at how misleading the boot space can be sometimes with SUVs.
