Has anyone used probiotics to help with long(ish) term antibiotic use?

I had to stop taking my antibiotics a week ago as my stomach started to swell and get hot. The problem is I need to take them to keep an infection at bay. Stopping has got my stomach back to good health but I want to try them again. I'll be taking them with meals this time (no preference for full or empty stomach in patient information leaflet) but I want to top my gut bacteria up as well.

I was planning to get some probiotic drinks from Lidl but I'm struggling to find info on which cultures are in their drinks. Yakkult seems to contain Lactobacillus which is supposed to help alleviate the symptoms.

ETA I can ring the consultant's secretary for formal advice but I don't want to bother him unnecessarily.

I use Bio-Kult capsules bought from Amazon. Seems to contain many more strains than you will get from the drinks.

Six minutes, thank you thumbup

They seem to tick all my boxes, no need for refrigerating and I can keep them in my 'ear care bag' along with my tablets and drops. It'll work out cheaper and less calorific than the drinks too.

Gotta be worth a try biggrin

This looks good and it has a high number (2 billion) per capsule. https://amzn.to/2Xe6WfG

I've ordered some, I'll check the patient information leaflet for optimum timing and give them a whirl.

You might want to start eating more prebiotics.

The obvious ones are onions, leaks and bananas. Your gut bacteria is going to have a party. Best not to go for an interview or date during this time as you might let out a few stinkers. biggrin

Mix the onions into other things, chop it finely or put it in a pasta or with veg you're going to cook. smile

Kefir is very good for gut health. It's a fermented milk drink which is very popular in Eastern Europe. Can be found in Tesco (avoid the flavoured/Tesco brand versions, and get the Polish one) and in most Polish/Eastern European shops.

I'll keep a look out for it, I'm often in Tesco and "every little helps" (sorry)

I started taking pro biotics roughly this time last year, after a course of antibiotics had given me the most chronic stomach problems. I use Microbiome Formula - Once Daily Men's - 50 billion. Very, very effective, no problems since.

Glad it worked for you thumbup I'll try those if the ones I've ordered don't work as unfortunately I might be on antibiotics for a few months.

How strange, I was coming on here to ask about this today - I did a course of antibiotics last October and I just haven't been right since.

I will give them a go.

edit: didn't know you can get tablets, that sounds like the way to go for me.

How spooky biggrin

I bought some Activia yoghurt while waiting for the supplements to arrive tomorrow, it settled the fizzing sensation quite quickly.

I sympathise with you as it is a nasty side effect of antibiotics.

I don't feel like I am that far off being sorted, but it has been frustrating be so maybe some probiotics will take me over the line.

I take bio-kult prior to travelling and it seems to help protect against traveller's diarrhoea. I also take inulin daily to add to my soluble fermentable fibre. Go easy at first, 'cause you can get a bit ... gassy!

There is a reasonable amount of evidence for taking pro-biotics. Best for gut health is eating a diet with lots of veg in various colours.

I can hear the antibiotics are working again, which is ironic as this infection is part of the reason I'm half deaf. Fermented products scratchchinbeerbiggrin
