So I have a lovely red 118d Sport 2005, and it WAS on around 122,000 miles when I last noticed, which is probably around a week or so ago

I'm driving it yesterday and noticed the mileometer was reading 97,000 miles!

Had no work done during this period just driven normally
No it wasn't in km and now miles (ratio is all wrong for that anyway)
And yes, I'm driving the right car :-)

Losing that amount of miles could be seen as a bonus but as the last MOT read 118,000, would raise serious questions about whether the car was clocked!

Anyone heard of this before? Any ideas of a cause and cure?

Thanks in advance!

I am calling custard on this! We need proof of all the above not just a photo of your red 1 series. Also BMW would be veeeery interested in this if true so really you should start there.

Ultimately the car has been clocked and I am guessing the full story is that you have discovered this after buying it last week.

I understand your thought process however please don't judge so harshly

I came on here for advice not cynicism, what kind of proof are you looking for and I'll happily supply? Providing it doesn't compromise my identitiy, purchased May 2018 by the way

Thanks

Photo of clocks showing mileage, plus reg of car would help.

I'd hit up some bmw specific forums if I were you, they'll probably have a better idea

Alright I apologise for over zealous cynicism however experience suggests it's unlikely to be genuine, it's also half term so that also tends to bring out the trolls.

I really would contact BMW, they are the ones who will want to see this but in all likelihood they will suggest the car has been clocked at some stage, not necessarily by you but a previous owner.

Yeah, look fairplay and appreciate the apology

I'll attach the dash shots at point of sale, the ensuing purchase coversation with dates and a reg shot, the only thing I haven't got is a dash shot right now, but I can post that later when I get back to my car.

I'm just so confused how the hell it can drop by that kind of random amount and I've had a lot of Beemers, never seen the like! It's been a good car apart from this

First pick - dash shot

What was the reg before the current one; the MOT History is only showing last years MOT etc

It's Northern Irish plates, they didn't take part in the electronic MOT reg scheme

Look, if I can be clear, I know this sort of thing brings out the detectives in us all, and I'd be the same tbh, but it's a genuine problem, and I really don't want to be accused of skullduggery, was just looking for a cause and cure for the strangest car problem i think I've ever had :-)

I'll post on a beemer forum, but I'm now worried I'll get the same flack as here ahaha, and as for a beemer stealer, then they'll probably laugh at me too! Though shouldn't there be a record on changes in the memory?

You’ve got the tamper dot on the cluster. This shows there is a mismatch of mileages/chassis numbers on ECUs. The car stores the mileage on lots of different ECUs.

It’s probably got different mileages on different ECUs and got confused in which one to display.

A decent BMW specialist will be able to sort it for you. Such as BWChiptune.

So a friend who specialises in BMW stuff has suggested "Someone has been playing with CAN blockers" which can stop mileage being recorded by all the control modules.

Is the car modified in any way at all?

Yup the tamper dot is there on the original advert as well. Where are you based? We can then recommend a decent specialist from there.

Ah right! So it's possible that the bloke before had buggered with the mileage, or attempted to, and now it's got confused, is that about the size of it?

I'm based at Brighton, work in Haywards Heath

I'm not aware it's modded/tuned, it did have aftermarket xenon's which I had to remove for it's last MOT, maybe when these were put in it shafted things

Yeah aftermarket Xenons will have a CAN blocker on them. I would still suggest it has been clocked at some stage though, sadly common with cars on a lease or PCP where the owner has a mileage limit they have exceeded.
