Right, on my train to work earlier a couple of kids nearby were playing the old favourite, I spy with my little eye...

Now, the girl (approx 10) is the lead and calls for something beginning with ‘R’. Her oppo (boy aged about 7) went through the rigmarole of calling everything and anything beginning with ‘R’ but to no avail.

Answer? Red Bag!

Boy calls foul. ‘Red’ is not a thing but a description of a thing and shouldn’t be allowed. Girl insists that that a red bag is indeed a thing and calls the boy a sore loser. Both end up in a huff.

I’m with the boy on this but my missus claims the girl was perfectly entitled to the point. (She also wondered what I do all day if this is occupying my mind but no matter).

Who wins the point?

I'm with the boy, otherwise you end up with the stupidity that is "green leaf" etc..

This brings back memories. smile

When I was a kid most others I played with went by one word/thing answers, unless a game went on for a while.

When this happened slight descriptions were generally accepted, providing the things described were not previously done.

Siding with the boy here. I was however playing this game with my daughter and she pulled the colour/letter thing on me much to her amusement. I'm sure you could read something into that.

A Yorkshireman and his wife were playing 'I Spy' in the kitchen (the dark nights must have flown by).
"It begins with T" he says.
"Is it teapot?"
"No"
"Trivet?"
No
"Toaster?"
Nah.
This goes on for some time until she gives up "Go on then, what is it?"
'S easy' 'e ses pointing, "it's t'oven innit!"

Should have been "RB" for red bag anyway, even leaving out the "is the colour part of the name" question. Two words, two initials.

I agree.
When we played as kids my sisters often cheated with multiple initials, e.g. DAIHC = Dad Asleep In His Chair or more abstract items such as TROTW = The Reflection On The Wall, which might not have been there two minutes later.

Has anyone else played I Spy in the dark?

This. Definitely this. I can't believe the 10 y.o. tried to pull such a low down, dirty trick.

I blame the parents.

Majorly p!ssed off my kids on a drive down through France one year...my turn "I spy [etc] beginning with R"

Went most of the way for Orleans to Clermont-Ferrand before I finally relented at told them it was 'reflection' in the rear view mirror. Not sure they've ever forgiven me evil

Done similar as a smart arsed kid to my parents with Horizon. "Weve been going for an hour are you sure its still there..." biggrin

I call foul as well.

There's a version of I-Spy specifically for younger children which I played with my nephew, where you say "I spy with my little eye, something.. Green" or whatever the colour of the object is, before they know their alphabet.

Red Bag is not allowed as a "beginning with R" answer

I agree with the boy, if she had said RB it would have been different.
