Need a recommendation for fuel cards. Only have two vans but it's already a ball ache to fill them up myself/give my card out/process expenses. Just want a card for each van and a fuss free service. Cheers....

We use Silvey who supply us with key fuels cards (they're a broker for several). They're pretty spot on with the Key Fuels price if going direct, but without the cost per card.

Temporary switch to UK Fuels last year was horrendous.

Primarily get one that works at stations that will be useful.

AllStar or don’t bother. Forget Keyfuels - giant PITA because they’re not universally accepted, and where they are on motorway services quite often you’ll have to use a specific pump usually for HGV’s and the nozzle won’t fit. If you fill up on the forecourt they won’t accept and you have to pay cash or card.

For 2 vans a couple of prepaid Mastercard’s might be worth considering. Load a few hundred quid at a time and if someone does go rogue you limit your exposure.

I have a fuel Genie card which works well but will only allow you to use Supermarket garages.

I have been caught out a couple of times, have been meaning to get an Allstar card too.

I had a fuel genie one, as mentioned supermarket only but really straight forward and unless you spend 99% of the time in the sticks you’re always close to a supermarket filling station.

Get one that charges you pump prices not a fixed price.

This is 1 of 2 main decisions to make:
Decision 1 - Fixed weekly price regardless of station, means you get the same competitive(ish) price at motorway services making fill ups easy if vans are regular motorway users.

Decision 2 - Allstar which is accepted everywhere but has some nasty stings in the tail and admin fees for anything and everything. Or someone else which means restricted site selection, so you need to consider the regular van routes and what stations are on them. Though most card providers have an App now that will tell you where the nearest stations are if you put in your destination at start of journey, hence no excuse for drivers to say they didn't pass an appropriate station at some point in the last couple of hundred miles in the tank.

Allstar T&C example:
1. Network fee on every top up of £3.60
2. Annual card fee of £20
3. 15-20% markup when card used for M6 toll charges. Client didn't know this and is an approx £2k saving
4. Risk based pricing. Allstar have it in their T&C's o actually charge above the pump price when they deem the customer to be a credit risk.

Clause 8:
8. CREDIT AND RISK

We will undertake periodic risk assessments of you using an industry recognised risk exposure management tool and if, following such credit risk assessment, your credit risk exposure hits a specified risk exposure level or if for any other reason we reasonably suspect you may pose a credit risk (including in the event of late payment) to us we shall apply a risk based fee to your purchases for the purposes of mitigating the risk. You agree we may apply such fee immediately and without prior notice to you, although if we apply a risk based fee in this way we will notify you of our decision to apply the risk based fee, together with any additional details of the fee, as soon as reasonably practicable following the decision. You agree we may apply the fee from the point in time we receive the report indicating your risk exposure has hit the specified risk exposure level or when we otherwise decide (acting reasonably) to apply the fee. The rate of the risk based fee applicable will be determined by us but will not exceed the maximum risk based fee set out in the Fee Tariff. We shall continue to apply the risk based fee for such time as we believe, in our sole and reasonable discretion, you continue to pose an increased level of credit risk, including (but not limited to) your risk exposure returning to below the specified risk exposure level for a continuous period of no less than two calendar months. Our decision around the risk based fee is final and there shall be no back-dating or reimbursement of risk based fees applied by us to you.
