So after years of sharing a car with my brother, I graduated university in July there and have landed myself a pretty good job, so I'm looking to finally by myself a car as it's one of the things I've been looking forward to the most.

Been shopping around for a while to decide what car I'd like and narrowed it down to a few options. Was between getting a used 1/2 BMW 1 series or Audi A3 or a Brand Ford Fiesta. I went to a BMW dealer yesterday to see what they had, they had recently just got in an ex company car which was a Grey BMW 1 Series 1.5 118i Sport Sports Hatch 3 door and I fell in love with it immediately. It had 8606 miles and was registered last February so it's a year old.

It's being listed at £15,995 but while I was in the shop he said the best he could do was £15,835 with tax. I'm relatively new to the whole buying a car experience , I studied economics so when it comes to the finances of the car and working out my budget of what I can afford I'm confident with, but not sure what price should I be trying to get it for ? Obviously I know it's subjective and every dealer is different but I feel like I should be able to get more than £300 off than what he's said is his best, what price should I be looking at that would seem realistic. I was hoping to spend closer to the £15,000 mark so around £15,200 I'd go for it.

Thanks

If you studied economics then surely you wouldnt be asking a forum how to negotiate?

Check autotrader for prices of similar cars and then ring him up with your findings.

Tell him you like the car but not the price, leave him your number and see if he rings back.

If he doesnt then move on.

The 1 Series he is selling isnt the only grey 1 Series in the country, in fact, i struggle to get away from them.

Weird comment.

Anyway OP - search AT find the similar spec / miles and lowest priced one. Tell them if they match it you will put a deposit down.

But, main dealer you pay a slight premium so keep that in mind.

Yeah Plan on pretty much buying the car outright as my bank are offering me a loan at only 3% and I have around £5k savings myself, so I'm barely paying any interest at all over the course of 4-5 years.

The problem for me is that I'm from Northern Ireland so the market size isn't exactly great here, so if I was to look at mainland UK I would have to factor in shipping costs. Yeah I've done my research and the cheapest online I've seen is £15,600, so I'm gonna ask £15,400 - £15,500 inc road tax, I'm in no rush if they say no I'll wait for another to come up but reiterate the fact I have the money ready go if they are willing to drop the price.

It might work but they will know what the lowest price is. I imagine they would meet you at £15,600 or 700

Yeah they are currently offering £15,835 with tax included but ideally I'd like to get it £15,500-£15,600 but what I'll do is wait it out a few days see if they contact me then I'll have any idea of how desperately they want it shifted.

No you don't have to factor in transport costs, fly over & book a ferry so then enjoy the drive home.
