Is this Racist
Discussion
There have been lots of these debates popping up about people painting their face black/white in order to pose as a person of a different race. Is this racist.
I can understand if its done to undermine the race or poke fun but other situations its a celebration and not meant to put them down.
There are now even compaints about shoes because they have a black face and these have been pulled from the shops.

Is this all getting out of hand or am I missing something (possible my history is not that great)

First hit on google for 'blackface' explains why, if you care. I can understand if its done to undermine the race or poke fun but other situations its a celebration and not meant to put them down.

I'm currently making assumptions on why you posted this, here, rather than looking it up.
Depends on intent and context. Ali-G is a blackface character, but SBC manages to tread the line between harmless fun and being genuinely offensive quite carefully. Katy Perry's shoes aren't racist I feel, but they should be banned anyway because they're so f
king ugly.
Classic black-and-white minstrel style face paint has its roots firmly in Jim Crow, that's why it's offensive.

There is no way on God's green earth that you don't understand why blackface is unacceptable in a grown-up world.
I do understand where you are coming from but is it so in all situations. A Pair of shoes? There is not intent to undermine or poke fun.Edited by PAULJ5555 on Thursday 21st February 15:36

Isn't Ali G meant to be a "Wigga" character. Young white guy heavily influenced by "black" culture? I wouldn't consider that blackface. Badda said:

The black version of the shoe is a direct reference to when white people used to imprison black people, before hollowing them out and turning them into shoes.
The pink version is just a pink shoe with a face on it.
