Mrs SR has bought an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner for her modest collection of trinkets and baubles and she seems very happy with it.

She's suggested that I use it to clean my watches - my immediate reaction was that it sounds like a good idea for cleaning watch bracelets, but I'd rather nail my fingers to the floor than deliberately expose a mechanical or quartz movement to a blast of high frequency vibration.

What do you think ?

No!

Do not put a watch in it... ever.

Bracelets yes, watch head no. Mine's got a litle plastic stand arrangement which can hold the head clear of the liquid but i still prefer to remove the bracelet.

If your watch is a bit manky a gentle clean with a toothbrush & toothpaste it all it needs. Just remember to flush out the bezel well if it has one.

Thank you both for confirming what I thought.

I find 40 lengths in the swimming pool very effective for cleaning my watches that I know to be waterproof - the sapphire crtstal and ceramic on my Seamaster look like new afterwards.

Ultrasonic cleaners are good at breaking down grease and oils.... the seals on a watch too.

I suspect many watches would survive, but it's not worth the risk and it's why there's not a single watch handbook that says 'clean the watch in an ultrasonic bath'. smile

Pardon my ignorance but could you enlighten me how an ultrasonic cleaner would damage rubber seals ?

I dip my watch in this stuff, leave for five minutes then rinse with warm water.

Not actually used one but I would guess it would be to do with the cleaning chemicals used and the heat, which I believe gets to about 60 degrees centigrade.

Depends on which one. I put my g-shock into the ultrasonic cleaner when I clean my fuel injectors. I've put an invicta into it once and it stripped the paint off the bezel.

I would avoid using any chemical cleaner with it.
