Me and one of friends have bought a Ultima Evo coupe build kit to be delivered in March, but we still haven’t decided witch gearbox to go with. Ultima is recommending the G96.01 from a Porsche 996 Carrera 2, but when I browse the internet and ask Porsche people about it I hear a lot about it not being strong enough to handle the torque in the Ultima. We are going with a 570hp LS7 with 536 lbs torque so not the most powerful setup. But what are your expirence with this gearbox in a Ultima?

Hey man, I think you commented on my youtube video but I'll mention it here too. I run the G96/50 turbo/gt2 gearbox in my Evolution for a couple reasons. It's a stronger gear set than the G96/01 and it has taller ratios better suited for an engine with a lot of torque. It's a great match for the LS7 (even in stock form) and the LSD makes a difference when you're on the gas. The downside is that the G96/50 a much more expensive transaxle so the up front cost is higher.

Hey Will

Yes that's me in youtube smile I do know that the G96.50 gearbox is a lot stronger, but is it necessary to go with the stronger and more expensive one. Or is the G96.01 strong enough for the lower power LS7. Ultima recommends the G96.01 up until 700hp the the G96.50 on 700hp+ but when i ask a danish Porsche expert about it he says that the G96.01 newer will handle that power and torque, but Ultima says that they don't have any problems with that because of the light weight of the car. So if anyone have experience with the G96.01 in a Ultima i would be happy for any feedback smile

If you search for Ultima gearbox issues there are about equal number from “normal” Porsche transaxle and turbo transaxle owners.
Yes, the turbo box is stronger, yes, the normal boxes can handle an ls7.
What kills the boxes faster than anything is overheating on track.

I would buy the strongest box with the most suited ratios you can afford in your build and add measures to protect it e.g a transmission cooler etc.

Turbo box owners will always say their boxes are better - I have a g50-00 in mine that came out of another ls7 Ultima. Both had heavy track use and it lasted well.

I have the 996 carrera box in an 550 Hp ls3 gtr, 4 years and 14000 miles on its been faultless, but first gear is useless, the rest of the ratios are fine for the road, but I find myself constantly going for a non existent seventh gear. I bought the box for £400, and I have a spare that cost£300. In hindsight I wish I had fitted the turbo box.

That sounds very promising! We are going to use the car on the track (it’s not road legal in Denmark) but only for charity racing with paying clients, and with sick kids, so not heavy racing in any way, but maby a little harder on the gas then normal road use. But what makes you wish that you have selected the turbo box from the start? Is that just the gear ratio?

First gear is the biggest issue with me, it sounds ideal for what you are going to use it for, I would settle for a 4 speed with a tall diff

Good G50-52 boxes are now heading for £8000!!!!!!

Most of the time the torque in lower gears will result in wheel spin due to light weight..

If you use a 996 transaxle you need to install a 3.0 ring and pinion to make the gearbox compatible to the Small block engine. This completely changes the car.

The G50 (non-Turbo at least) with the shorter gear ratio that makes first gear a creeper-only gear. So you start in second for any street application. It's short along the range so that top gear is turning 2400rpm at 70 mph. Finally the rod-operated box shifts relatively slowly. It's not the best. I'd love to get a more modern cable-shifting model and install a longer final-drive. Pricey tho

I find that a low 1st gear is really helpful in traffic. I agree it is basically redundant on the track or the open road, but if you live in a busy part of the World as I do and you find yourself in slow traffic from time to time a low 1st gear will make the car easier to live with.

I am running a G50-20 box, which is a 6 speed (I think from a 993 non-turbo), which works really well with my 700hp LS7 motor. I have a rod shift, which I personally prefer to cable shift. Touch wood I have had no issues at all with it, albeit I have done little hard track driving.

I also have the 50-20.
First gear for crawling in traffic then for moving off 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th. Engine has so much torque over a wide band you don't need the gears in between. Could easily be a 4 speed (which was in the first Ultima I rode in....thanks Andy).

Go with the G96.01 as recommended, wont be a problem with a 550hp Ultima and it has near perfectly matched ratios to be at peak torque after each shift with an LS7 and a 316km/h top speed using the 19" wheel and a 7200rpm limit.

If you would like to go for an Ultima fuel conservation record or be slower, get a 996 Turbo gearbox or tall ratio ancient, clunky G50.

The popcorn is ready smile
