I am looking to apply for a job which involves a number of security type checks - these are likely to take months.

I suspect what will happen, if I get the job, is that they will offer it subject to checks and then allow me to start whilst do they do the checks.

Lets say I fail the checks - I would most likely be let go.

I am fairly sure I would pass the checks but the involve looking at family etc and I cannot be sure what other people I am linked to have been upto.

I may therefore suggest I will only leave my current job once they had done the checks and its all OK (which in turn may make it less likely I get the job as it coudl add 2-3 months delay).

I presume if I start the job subject to checks and then I fail it, I won't have a leg to stand on? Even if I have been there for months.

Should I definitley hold out for a written contract with confirmation checks are all done?

The employer is a local authority.

What job with a local authority involves any kind of "security" checks? Do you mean criminal records check?

Do you think you can be blackmailed?

Do you have significant debts? Do you have a secret family? Are you a homosexual in a hetro relationship? Do you support any extreme political groups? Are you a terrorist?

If the answer is no to all those, the chances of you failing a low-level security check are slim.

Really depends on the check

DBS/CRB nearly everyone passes and you'd know yourself if you werent going to

SC Level - bit harder but not that hard to achieve

DV - you've already failed

The LA will likely have had this question asked before, but yes if you start and fail I would imagine you would be out on your ear as unable to to perform the role.

Its nothing top secret - its just that the job involves working with the Police and sharing data. Its non police vetting.

The main issue is that it involves family and I cannot account for how deep they will go or what secrets family may have so i am not assured a guaranteed pass.

I think I'll just hold out for them to do the checks first...

wouldnt it be a big negligent for them to allow me to start though. presumably you wouldnt let someone working with vulunerable adults or kids start until the DBS was completed? dont see why this is much different.

Be careful with DBS

I had an issue with trying to pass it via the online method, was offered several companies to use and could pass with none of them, no idea why, have no kind of record that would spring out. thought it was electoral roll, but no. So just be warned, it can easily become a pain, even if you think you are OK.

Had to do it by post manually, which took some time and led in part to a job offer being rescinded, mainly due to an utterly inept recruiter.

You probably need to nail down what kind of vetting we are talking about here.

Is this some internal employer process, or a national one?

Are you thinking of non-police *personnel* vetting (NPPV)?

I used to work for stuff that needed DV clearance. I got SC pretty quickly, but the DV took 6 months. I didn't tell new place until new job was confirmed, and I have a confirmed start date and confirmation that I had passed and a firm offer in writing.

They'll likely offer on the condition of gaining required clearance.

Its NPPV2

Best description I could find is here:

https://www.kent.police.uk/policy/legal-and-profes...

I've already done the same job before and didn't have to go through the process - although it was 10 years ago.

It might take a bit of time, but the level of vetting is quite low so unless there's an obvious reason you can think of, that you haven't disclosed, it's unlikely there will be an issue.

So from your link, for level 2 they'll check the following

3.15 Minimum Standard Requirement: PNC and PND (Police National Database)/local intelligence checks, other non-conviction databases and Special Branch for applicant, spouse/partner and co-residents. Military and Professional Standards checks on the applicant if required. Credit Reference check on applicant. A Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) may be applied where appropriate.

In fact it looks like level 3 can be supported by an SC, so place level 2 below an SC but above a DBS

You'll be grand

if its DV then you wont get the job offer until and unless the clearance is granted and that can take up to and including a year. if they do otherwise it'll be in breach of the cabinet office security protocol.

Its not DV its NPPV

It did occur to me that they shouldnt really let me start anyway until the checks are done as I will not have been classed as OK anyway.

I'm not familiar with police but in other cleared roles you can sometimes start but may be on an escorted building pass and be limited in what jobs you're able to do.

I did a software project with one of the UK's Police Forces. Until my SC came through, I had to work in a basement room with no windows with a member of staff watching the door, If we needed a toilet break or a trip to the canteen we would be escorted.

Their canteen had the most amazing sausage rolls I have ever eaten, delicious.
