minimum wage query
Discussion
I'm trying to help find my teenage brother a job and I've been looking online.
I've found one job that offers age appropriate national minimum wage and thats it.
They are saying you need to wear that store specific clothing whilst at work but you can buy it at 50% discount. This isn't the actual brand just an example. But lets say its JD Sports and they want you to wear Nike clothing only, bought from them at half price.
The clothes would be nike branded, not JD Sports, so you could if you wanted wear them outside of work too.
They are also insisting you have your own smart phone to use in work, to do stock checks via their staff app.
Are either one or both of these a breach of min wage laws?
If Ive got a Nokia 3310 and don't own Nike polo shirts then I'm going to lose £200+ off my first wage....

Pretty poor if they want you to have your own smart phone for use in work time, they should provide things like that surely. My advice would be to look beyond retail jobs, depending on his interests or career ideas, perhaps try knocking on a few doors around a trading estate etc.
Try doing care work. You have to provide your own transport and you only get paid when you are actually providing care. The journeys between each appointment visits are unpaid! To top it off the time for easy visit is fixed. If it takes longer that's also unpaid.
on this subject I assume that where a job has a "loose" finishing time ie; you finish wen you finish that days work that the employer must pay for additional hours so as not to breach NMW rates?
i saw an employer recently and they said the wages were £340 a week start at 6.30am supposed to finish at 2.30pm plus a saturday roughly 43 hours but you finish when you finish and it sounded like your wage was fixed even if you put in say an extra 6 hours a week.
