S10 tail housing swap

I'm rebuilding my gearbox and fitting the S10 tailhousing in the process.

The new S10 tail housing doesn't have the shift guide plate fitted, so I need to take the guide plate out of the old tail housing and put it t into the S10.

The problem is I can't see how to remove the guide plate from the old tail housing. There is no lip to get a puller under and no access from inside the tailhousing casting to tap it out from behind.

Does anyone have any experience of this or any suggestions how to get the guide plate out?

From your picture, it looks like the guide has to be pressed out from the opposing side. The two small holes would form part of the locator platform.

I think the two small holes in the S10 housing (second photo) are oil drain holes.

On the original housing the socket into which the guide plate fits doesn't go through to the area where the mainshaft runs, there is no access from underneath the guide plate to press or tap it out.

In that case, you have limited options. Worse case scenario is to destroy the old box to get the guide plate out or source a New/Used one from a specialist gearbox suuplier.

I managed to contact John Reid at Readman Racing a little earlier, he told me it's held in with loctite and needs heat and perserverance.

Heat gun and some gentle levering to avoid damage to the old housing and twenty minutes later it's out.

Well done, I never thought of warming it up to expand the alloy housing. In the on-line service manual it says do-not remove the Detent Plate for some reason.
