Does my X1 have blutooth?
Discussion
Just bought a used X1 2.0d for the wife (privately).
Autotrader said it had blutooth. There's 'telephone' & 'voice' symbol on the steering wheel. And there's a 'telephone' symbol on the stereo.
But, none of them seem to work.
So it either doesn't have blutooth at all, and therefore it's normal to have these buttons present in the car but not functioning (as though BMW fit the same steering wheel regardless of options) and Autotrader sometimes gets it wrong. (Presume they pull the options list from the reg No.)
Or we're doing something wrong. I've cycled through the menu system, and held down each button for a number of seconds.
Anyone got any clues?
And then.... If it doesn't have built in blutooth, does anyone have any recommendations for an aftermarket installation?
IIRC BMW is notoriously confusing in this area.

Which model year is it? I bought a 2018 (F48) X1 last month and you can pair phones by pressing COM on the idrive controller and then select Manage Phones. You can even retrospectively code some of the enhanced Bluetooth functionality using Bimmer Code and an OBDII dongle from Amazon. I have coded quite a few helpful tweaks.

Put the VIN number in a vin checker such as bmwvin.com and it will give you its spec
Some of the buttons can be blanks depending on spec/options fitted
The voice button will only work if you have voice command fitted which is an option if you have pro media .. but all cars have the button !
I had it on my X1 and it wasn’t worth it really

I can't get any of the VIN checkers to work. That website, for example, just returns a a blank page. And this one: http://bimmer.work/ just refreshes the page when I press submit!
Doing a bit more reading on the matter - I think its quite common for cars of that era to have a multifunction steering wheel AND a 'professional' head unit bit still not have a Blutooth facility.
Had all of this with an M135i I once had... Really confusing set up by BMW.

Can probably get an after fit kit which will give you Bluetooth.
My 2003 e46 330ci came with a Nokia kit originally that wouldn't work with a smart android phone. replaced the nokia kit with a parrot kit(bought 2nd hand) and specific to car leads to wire it in. Works well, multi function buttons work on steering wheel and google voice commands accepted by phone. Parrot kit has a small controller that l put in glovebox, only need to pair phone for 1st time or if you change phone. Phone pairs within automatically within about 30secs of getting into car-emits a a smlll bleep.
Cost about £80 in total -got instructions from internet on how to fit it.

So, let me get this right.
You bought a car that you thought had something going by the advert, it seems that it is important to you & yet you didn't check it or at least ask the owner if it had it.
HMM, not the best way to approach something as significant as a car purchase.
Have you never heard the adage "push all the buttons & make sure they all work" when referring to car functions?
That aside not everyone knows that with A=T these days the adverts are pretty much pre-populated with options, as in when you (as a seller) select that you are selling a "BMW 320d 2010 M-sport" the advert is filled up with options that you are then supposed to delete those not fitted but as it isn't that obvious & nobody reads what they have done & most sellers don't ACTUALLY know what they are selling these things happen pretty regularly.
Hence the phrase "buyer beware" it is your responsibility to check it unless it is misleading, but as it is a private buy you are going to find it hard to do anything about it.
Sorry if that comes across as "holier than thou" or patronising, it isn't meant to be, but they are the fact.

Thanks I'll look into that option.
