I chap I know is picking up a newish FFRR and he's been offered 4 grand trade in on his 2008 LS600h. It's done 220,000 and has a FULL Lexus history and looks like it's done 40,000, like most of them

He knows I covet the car and he's said that if I want it, I can have it for the 4 grand instead of chopping it in.

Now I don't need a car, I have a Volvo on a lease right now but that has never stopped me before!

So question. Do I? Or do I just go and empty my savings account and burn it all in my garden to save myself the hassle??

Do it.

You know you can chop it in for 4k if needed.

I love this place, so many people as bonkers as me!

The problem is I don't know much about these cars (I've had LS400 and GS430 in the past) and 220,000 miles sounds a LOT! Plus I don't know the deal about the hybrid/batteries and what happens when they go all sorts of wrong. There's not much I can actually find out on the t'internet either, probably because they didn't sell that many.

However I do know all the electrics work. All of them. Just like they did on my other Lexus's

I suppose main concerns are hydrid/air suspension/gearbox (not sure about CVT after having an Audi Multichronic in the past), does anyone know any owners on here so I know what to check for? I do trust the guy, he ain't bothered if I buy it or not.

Quite possibly the most bonkers impulse purchase ever?

Been told it's the steering and suspension on the LS's that cost big money as they are OE only items. Check what work has been done or at least keep a bork fund available. It's still close to £100k car remember...

Strangely enough I've been watching a few 200k+ milers on Autotrader wishing that I didn't have another year left on my Volvo lease. I know absolutely nothing about them either.

Based on that description alone it seems like an absolute steal. If it's got the rear seat relaxation pack then it would be on AT for around £6k-£7k. The cheapest one on AT is a 200k miler that's a bit thin on options (all things considered) at £5k.

I'd buy it!

CVT, batteries etc will be similar tech to the stuff used in other Lexus and Toyota Prius, all are known for reliability. If it's got a full Lexus history it should have been cosseted and kept up to date.

Worst case you don't like it or find out something less than ideal you can probably punt it on for more than you paid.

How often do you get the chance to buy a relatively worry free super barge?

We have been tracking their descent into the sub £5k bracket on the barge thread. I think the one I posted there last night is referred to above. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Okay, I think I'm gonna do this. It doesn't have the rear relaxation thing, which is good as I have 3 kids! I would have do decide which one to lose if it did have RSR and that would just be awkward!

Not the most bonkers car related thing I have done really, but it's up there! 220,000 miles! What am I thinking?! Looking today at ones for sale it's amazing how many have done over 200k, there's one I saw up with 284k! Who says it won't do 500k?!

Great build quality, as been said

220k on a big Lexus is nothing to worry about, it what it was made for.

I'd snap it up, I'm trying to stop myself buying a well priced 300k E220

The reason there’s nothing on the internet about the hybrid/battery stuff is because they don’t go wrong!

A few years ago I had the cambelt replaced on my IS200 at a Lexus specialist and I asked him about the hybrid RX400’s and I said I bet it’s really complicated trying to fix one of those if the battery packs up etc and he literally said they never go wrong for him to see how difficult or complicated the job is, said they’re all in for routine servicing and brakes etc, nothing else!

Not sure how similar they are to the Prius, but battery changing on that isn't too difficult. Just lots of trim to remove so its a bit of a time consumer, but other than that its not terribly hard.

There is a massive amount online about the battery packs. They seem to last to around 120k before needing a replacement.

The CVT gearbox on these cars are also very complicated. I don't know if it's the same for the LS600, but my GS450 of the same age has an issue with the CVT pump and the hybrid batteries.
