Hi,
First off, sorry if I’m in the wrong place Ive never used a forum before! Other than changing simple bits and having common sense I don’t know a lot about cars either! 🤦🏻‍♂️
I have a ‘06 series 1 bmw. Went out yesterday and had no power, wouldn’t turn over, nothing.
Decided to change the battery, went and got one that Halfords said was the one. Fitted it and everything came on but it turns over but never starts. Ring BMW they say it has to be exact replacement. Went and got that, changed again and exactly the same thing.

Does anyone know if this is a simple fix or there is there a more serious problem?

Any advice would be massively appreciated.

Thanks
Joel

So, the car cranks but doesn't start?

If you try and start the car too many times with a dead battery the key loses sync with the ECU.

You really need to plug it into diagnostics like DIS, the BMW system, autologic or someone with a Snap On system and resync the system.

The battery will be fine, however, if you do get someone out to help you, get them to tell the car a new battery has been fitted too. It charges a new battery slightly differently to an old one.

Where are you located?

It is important to realise the car will crank but not start.

If there is no crank at all it is something else. Probably something simply like the starter motor.
The solenoids burn out quite often on these when they get to 12 or so years old.

There is a battery cable/fuseboard recall on these at the moment but if it cranks over, it's probably not that. An old 06 plate one isn't too fussy about batteries from the point of view of it starting. I had a stbox 120d in 2 weeks ago with a very dead battery. Chucked one in from a Volvo S60 and away it went.
