Topcats TVR Tuscan track day Bedford 28.09.02
Discussion
Hard to believe, but there's still space for one more lucky punter to join us next weekend, in what must be just about one of the fastest cars that most of us will ever get to drive - a TVR Race Tuscan in race trim.
I know, I can hardly believe it either. To be honest I'd almost rather keep this quiet because I'm secretly hoping the fewer people turn up, the more track time the rest of us will get. But that seems a little unfair since we will get plenty of track time anyway, and for this price it has got to be the motoring bargain of the year. In fact I worked out that it is roughly the same cost to take my own car on a normal track day without instruction, by the time you count tyres, brakes, fuel and so on.

Not sure whether I want you to take this offer up or not - on second thoughts best if you stay away from the 28th and all book on one of the other dates.

Pete,
I am very, very tempted but there is no chance of making this weekend as a) I'm at Rockingham on Sunday b) Debs won't allow me two days out c) the size of the bill I'm just about to get from Tower View will put paid to any more expenditure for a while!
Provided that either Steve's calipers (I've borrowed them) or mine are sorted by Saturday then I will see if I can disappear for a short while and pop up and say hi to you and Charlotte.....I'll see if I can sweet talk her into giving me a discount or a freebie (after all, she has driven my car before ;-) )

Is that 602 pounds each or in total? Because if it is each, I am sure I can take my car to a track day all in for cheaper than that. But if it is in total, I'm very interested in coming!

Its each. How much does a set of tyres and brakes cost you? I've just spent £250 on new discs, pads will be over a hundred quid, maybe £500 for a set of tyres. getting on for a grand altogether. I can generally get two or three track days out of a set of tyres and brakes, although it's also easy to trash the whole lot if I get too carried away. So a track day will cost me very roughly £300 towards tyres and brakes. A typical track day costs me around £100 in fuel by the time I've driven there and back. So that's £400 before I've paid for the track day itself. Cheapest would be around £100, up to maybe £300 ish for a technique day with instruction. So ballpark cost for me would be between £500 and £700 for a typical track day with little or no tuition. That's ignoring general wear and tear on the car, the substantial hassle if the car breaks down at the track, and the roughly 1:50 chance of stuffing the car. (I've done more than 50 so far with no incidents, but it does seem to average about 1:50 across the board.) Your costs may be different, I don't know, but it's surprising how quickly the costs mount up.
Against that, the Tuscan costs are similar, it's a dramatically faster car, full time expert tuition, and it's not my car that's at risk. I never thought I'd be one of these flash gits who just turns up and jumps into a professionally prepared car, but at these prices it'd be rude not to ...
(There's no doubt in my mind that prices will go up next year once this scheme catches on.)

Wow, well I'm glad I drive a Superlight R cos my running costs are nowhere near yours!
Agree the Tuscan race car would be awesome but I was just questioning comparing it to a track day in cost terms. I'm sure it would be a totally different experience - in my case in cost terms as well as thrill terms.
On reflection, I'm going to hire a Supergrad for 500 a race though.

Jackal has a good analysis of track day costs here (follow the 'Counting the Cost' link).
He reckons to average 970 a go for 10 trackdays a year in a Caterham. Admittedly some of the costs are going to be the same using someone elses car, but a Tuscan racer is significantly more expensive to run than a Caterham.
So, the costs of this day out start to seem even more reasonable......
