Buying first supercar - advice needed
Discussion
Hi everyone,
After many years of being out the performance car game to grow my business and other grown up commitments I am finally beginning to start planning my first supercar purchase - hopefully in the next 1-2 years. My last semi performance car was a bmw 335i.
I’m the sort who likes to plan things well in advance. I’d prefer obviously buying brand new but budget and other factors such as order time might change that to an upto 2/3 year old car.
This brings me to my first question: can anyone order a brand new Ferrari/lambo/McLaren without a prior relationship? I’ve heard these guys don’t even entertain orders from people who haven’t ordered before? Is that true? If I can order say a 488, huracan / 570s etc how long is the wait time?
I guess it’s not the end of the world not ordering new as you can get a good selection almost new with under 2/3k miles. However it would be better being able to spec the exact colour of stitching considering you’re spending so much.
Next question: I understand most would finance such purchases of cars between 100-200 grand however the interest you would end up paying is ridiculous. So I’m saving up cash for the purchase. Is this the right thing to do? Should I look further into finance costs? Is it stupid to make a purchase like this on cash?
Last but not least: the UK does seem a rather fluid market for these types of cars and I’m assuming it’s not a problem to sell one when the time comes? From what I can tell some of these cars don’t depreciate too much. Looking at 488s in the used market hardly see one for less than 180k. That’s not too bad considering they are a few years old now. Even some of the McLarens after 2 years lose about 20k which is acceptable at this level.
Is budgeting around 10/15k loss per year on a 2 year old car seem right? Obviously more on brand new car which costs closer to 200k.
Have really been looking at stuff all the way from a 3 year old California t and new vantage upto huracan / 488s.
Any advice/input would be great especially from those with experience of purchasing such cars. Would also like to add this won’t be my only car. So practicality doesn’t really matter too much. Although I would be driving it as often as I can there would be times that I’d use the more sensible family car.
Thanks for reading.

You can go into a Ferrari/Lamborghini dealer and order whatever you like. As said, it’s the ‘special’, limited run cars that need a relationship
IINM, you are looking at a 2 year wait for, say, a Ferrari. Unless you an get into a cancelled build slot.
Finance - depends on your circumstances. Financing the car works for a lot of people as they have business interests and/or investments which justify keeping the cash somewhere else. This may or may not be the case for you.
