Have a 2018 bmw 530d done 17000 miles and the service light has just came on. Bmw say service is £385 and local garage is saying £180 so just wanted to ask what people’s opinions are on dealer vs independent garages when it comes to services?

I know you don't necessarily have to have a BMW service for the warranty to be valid but it would remove any doubt further down the line if you have a problem. BMW have also provided 'good will' to vehicles outside of the warranty period if they have had a BMW service which may provide you some 'piece of mind'. I've just had my 2013 320d serviced at BMW (to maintain the full BMW service) and may continue doing the same for a couple more years. I'd probably start using an independent garage when the vehicle is worth much less (assuming I still have it by then).

I expect ill keep the car for the next 3-5 years so £200 extra per service only = to £600-£1000 Do bmw cars with full bmw service history go for much more ?

Ask the dealer for a price if you supply the oil.... not uncommon for them to charge £20,-£30 a litre
Providing the oil is BMW LL04 spec you could save yourself £60 - £80 quid.

FYI

I have a 2017 520d, which had it's first service at 17000 miles last week

Local main dealer charged me £259 for the basic service, so it may be worth negotiating or talking to another dealer.

One last thing. The independent garage says hes bmw approved and it goes on the bmw database, i dont really understand. Hes a local garage no bmw sign just his name above the shop but hes said its just the same as going to bmw, is he pulling my leg ?

If he signs (and pays) up to BMWs online system he can record the service on their central database.

So then would that be looked at as a bmw service or not ?

I don’t think it would as it’s not a BMW dealer doing the work.

Seems expensive for a first service. The wife’s X1 25d had its first service last month, £250 at the local main dealer.

Not sure really? When I traded my last car in (Honda Civic) the dealer wasn't bothered about seeing all the service history I'd accumulated over the years and initially offered bottom book for a mint vehicle! If it were me I'd definitely get the first 3 years done by BMW.

That looks expensive for a 1st service! What will they do for that?

I haven't had newish BMWS for a while but I had the service pack on both of them, although I believe it's been cut down to 4 years rather than the 5 years I had. But when I bought the pack for my 123d in 2009 it only had to be bought before the 1st service, so it might be worth asking for a price (in 2009 mine cost £660).

I just wanted to keep the history all main agent just in case of a warranty issue (given it had the N47 engine that was probably a good idea in retrospect). laugh

First service at a main dealer on my 335d (x drive) was £285 total
Your £385 sounds a bit pricey

Called bmw up this morning they quoted me £385 a few days ago but this morning its £392 said first service requires oil and filter change. I asked how much a service plan was and was told £399 for 3 years or 36000 miles. Said i would take that but couldn’t for some reason, woman took my details and said she would phone me back.

Ask for a breakdown of the costs: for my 335d first service it was
Service, standard scope (2 units worth) = £23.86
Oil service, (3 units) = £35.52
Filter element = £17.58
Oil (synthetic 0/30) = £91 (gulp)
Microfilter (2 units) = £23.68
Microfilter = £46.32
Total Net cost = £237.78
VAT = £47.56
Gross total = £285.34

The woman called me back this afternoon, so got the 3 year / 36000 miles service plan for £399 so happy with that.
I noticed this morning when they quoted me £392 for my first service they didn’t mention that i could buy a 3 year service plan for just £7 more 😂 i had to ask them for the service plan price and the woman said £399 right off the top of her head but just had to call me back as i think she had to contact somone else to put it through.

Are you sure it's 3 years?

Every dealer I spoke to said that service inclusive is 36000 miles or 2 years......

Yes woman said 3 years or 36000 miles pretty amazing deal considering 1 service is only £7 cheaper
