Derren Brown uses lots of NLP and other types of suggestion to achieve the tricks.
He uses a lot of stuff from Milton Erickson (supposedly the best hypnotist and therapist ever) and Richard Bandler to name a few.
If you buy his DVD you will see him using all sorts of tricks to get people to do things from Anchoring to Sleight of mouth (good book by the way).

He performs 'Cold Reading' to do this which lots of other supposed psychics and 'mind readers' do.
Its amazing what information you can get out of someone by looking at them using 'cold reading' techniques. I used to use it as a party trick in nightclubs and the like.

The guy is obviously extremely gifted, and he can't be using stooges throughout his work as there are so many people he would have to keep quite.
The thing that impresses me the most is that he openly admits that he does his stuff (cold-reading, etc) through learned skill rather than a 'gift', and doesn't claim to have paranormal powers either - quite the contrary in fact.
It must p*ss off the mediums, psychics, etc, to see a guy doing more amazing stuff than them, and yet admit it's all through manipulation, suggestion and reading.
Just goes to show what a load of bollox most of this paramormal mumbo-jumbo is!
Another thing that amazes me is the sheer volume of work he does. You can kind of comprehend that, if a person trains to do a particular 'trick' for many years, then maybe with hard work and determination they will get to the stage where they can pull it off. But Derren keeps coming up with more and more stuff, and does something different everytime I see him.
When I watched him do the 'Russian Roulette' thing I thought he'd cocked it up, and didn't really think he was all that special. But since then, just about everything he does astounds me!

Yeah, Derren's stuff is amazing and I think the tricks out on the street with zero props are the best- rock, paper, scissors etc.
Also, the memory stuff he's trained- where he can memorise up to 3(or 4?) decks of cards by assigning all 52 cards in a deck a particular item (i.e. a lampshade), which are all stored in a big victorian house in his mind and each with 4 stickers each- then, when a card is dealt, in his mind he removes a sticker from that item to work out what is left. Amazing stuff.

Most of the stuff he does is your traditional Paul Daniels 'magic'. He just dresses it up to make it acceptable to your modern media savvy crowd.
The stuff he did with that bloke who made the playing cards (last week) was very average. If you know what you are looking at you can see that his slight-of-hand and misdirection are quite crude.

So did Derren read all the books and find the places where it said 'pop?'
I only started watching his show the other week and was amazed by his stunts. The one that i was particularly impresed with was when he put a zombie-killing arcade shooting game in a pub and waited for some blokes to play it - them he put one of them to sleep with a series of strobe light effects on the screen.
They transported him down the road to a errily lit warehouse that was identical to the game and awoke him with a paintgun. Cue zombies closing in and bloke initally cacking himself and wondering what the hell is going on, trying to escape - then losing his rag and starting to blast the zombies... At the stage where he got cornered in a glass office Derren thought it was getting too much so he put the guy back to sleep and droppped him back in front of the game. He awoke to see the 'game over' screen then the Derren team all came into the room asking him how he liked the revolutionary new computer game -lol
They showed him what happened in the warehouse after though to make sure he didnt have any lasting damage from the escapade.

Very clever, very dedicated, of a higher caliber than the average man is likely to reach after a lifetime of practise, but in theory anyone can attain many of the skills employed with a lot of hard work.
He learnt NLP on a course with a friend of a friend of mine. Its like anything in life - show dedication, put in the effort, and whatever you wish to achieve (talent assuming) will be yours. He is gifted though, in as far as he had the latent ability to work with audiences as a showman, and his dedication paid off.
Im currently reading 'Pure Effect' which is a book on magical artistry (aimed at the magician) and have a DVD of his called 'International Magic - The Derren Brown Lecture" (also aimed at magicians). Fantastic stuff! Well worth a read
Your best bet would be to buy the two, and pick up a copy of Roberto Giobbi's "Card College" volume 1. Give yourself a year, plenty of practise, and you'll be able to perform some breaks, lifts, shuffles flourishes and tricks to wow and leave friends very impressed
All items are available from www.internationalmagic.com - the guys there know derren well, and will give you plenty of advice if you want to start learning. I also picked up a book on mentalism which is fantastic, well worth checking out if you're interested
