Looking into one of these but wonder if you get shafted on the exchange rate the credit card provider use to the point that the saving from having no transaction fee is negated.

Has anyone used one that can offer any experience?

I'm after a new long-term 0% interest purchase card soon anyway and was going to go with the Post Office Platinum one that had 28 months at 0% as well as no foreign transaction fee.

Unfortunately this is no longer available at 28 months, just 8 months. Would it be worth holding out for one or best to still exchange all money prior to going abroad?

I spend most of my life abroad and use two separate cards (for security in case I had to cancel one / bank system problems, and some hire car companies need two cards on certain cars) and use both Barclaycard Platinum and Santander cards.

I'm not sure which one gives the better exchange rate, Santander generally I think, but I never look too closely. One thing is for sure though that they both save a stack compared to foreign transaction fees if you are using them regularly! I dread to think how much I'd rack up in fees these days.

(Barclaycard app a million times better than Santander online banking it has to be said).

Halifax Clarity cards don’t have forex fees.

I use my Revolut card a lot abroad. No fees and the forex rates are very good.

+1 on the PO card.

I've had mine for a number of years and rates are competitive.

They're not the highest but not worth losing sleep over.

+1 for the Post office card , pay only the bank rate on every overseas transaction , see it vary marginally every day.

I only use it abroad, not really interested in 0% transfers or anything like that.

It’s run through the Bank of Ireland iirc.

Presumably you can just shift the balance to another 0% card though? Or pay it off...

OP, I think you are wanting 2 cards. One for balance transfers and for for foreign spending? See the moneysavingexpert articles. For overseas spending I use Tandem as you get 0.5% cashback.

I use my Santander 123 credit card for € transaction all the time, not looked too closely at the rate on it but I've always assumed it was the same as my Santander Zero account, which seems to give you the daily rate. they do charge for cash withdrawals from the 123 but not for card payments.

I got a Revolut card to transfer money from £ to € and vice verse but haven't really used it much, one disadvantage to Revolut is I believe it's not covered by the FSCS guarantee or similar, plus of course it's effectively a prepay/debit rather than credit card.

Not balance transfers, just purchases.

But yes, given the Post Office one I initially mentioned is no longer on the offer it was, I'll look to get another 28 month 0% interest spending card and a separate one for abroad. That Tandem card seems to be the best bet.

Sounds good but I don't do monthly fees when it comes to banking, would never get my monies worth out of any offers I've ever seen.

Edit: also, thanks for the suggestions.

Credit limit of £1200 ? , whoever set that limit clearly hasn’t been on holiday with my wife.

Assumed credit limit. I’d be surprised if anyone eligible for the card was limited to that on the CC.
