Clio 172/182 is the standard answer. Although, i do find myself looking at Fiesta ST150's for some reason. Not a patch on the Clio's, but still good fun and probably a bit more relaxed.

EP3 Type R? Clio 197?

Clio 182 has to be the answer if you can find one that's had its belt replaced recently and in decent condition. I've had 2 and both were significantly more enjoyable than the R53 Cooper S I had.

Fiesta ST150 didn't really feel like a performance car to me, i had a test drive on my own and it really wasn't what i was looking for. No fast ford has done much for me in fairness though.

Not had an EP3 because the looks put me off but if its even half the car that my DC5 was then it will be a fantastic drive. WIll be leggy for 3k though.

Owned a Clio 182 & MCS

Driven CTR & Golf GTI (mk5)

I would say the Clio is the better drivers car out the box, but with a few modifications the MCS is a hell of a lot of fun... can't beat it sound wise - The supercharger is very addictive!

CTR felt great to drive, but not that fast - Perhaps because you have to hit the high revs to get the power out of it.

Golf I really liked, and I would have bought the one I test drove, but they're obviously a little over budget (and were for me at the time too)

Ep3 type R for that budget, cracking cars for the money these days, and reliable to boot.
