The exhaust smells funny outside at idle.

They're poorly equipped as standard.

Great cars, though.

Tried one. Did not like it. Bought a Macan SD.

Wife had one a couple of years ago, good performance, fuel economy low 30's most of the time and no running issues in 45,000 miles, apart from a squeaky pan roof. I rated it but the dealers are a mixed bag so do your homework before servicing (though poor dealerships not exclusive to Audi).

Just to hijack... Are they fun at all?

I always imagined that the high position and torquey engine would make for a decent B road machine?

Depends on driving style; is it outright agressive? No, but it isn't supposed to be. Goes, stops, and steers considerably better than a cooking model Q5 which can roll/pitch a lot.

It has good wheel travel (suits bumpy B roads), excellent visibility, oodles of grip and traction, and a very flexible engine. I imagine one could keep a Golf R/S3 very honest on a cross country jaunt...

The engine itself is incredibly effective rather than outright fun, but I suppose you could say that of most quick diesels.

Thanks Dr G. Exactly what I thought it would be like.

I remember one having a go at me in my old supercharged Golf R32 some years ago, over about 20 miles of very clear driving. I appreciate that rolling pace isn't everything, but I was quite surprised by this one's lack of it.

That’s what put me off when I was looking at one, the interior looks ancient & I know once the novelty factor of the speed wore off, the interior would have grated on me, the Mrs really wanted one but we ended up going for a 335d instead.
