Thinking of getting a Scooter/moped
Discussion
Scooters are great fun for whizzing about town, I had a Vespa ET4 for similar about a decade ago when I couldn't be arsed with the whole getting kitted up malarkey.
That said I had my only ever bike crash on it - gave it the beans turning right uphill in the rain, failed to notice a very wet manhole cover and all of its 12bhp caused the back end to step out, "highsiding" me and causing me to rip the trousers of an expensive Armani suit! That'll learn me.
I also got nicked for speeding on it - 36 in a 30 past a school!
Dunno about insurance but I understand they are a bit of a theft magnet for feral youths so make sure you have somewhere secure to park it at both end of the commute. Annoyingly the theft of any motor vehicle counts against your car insurance record, although obvs you have separate NCB per policy. .

We rented at ET4 in Crete many years ago and I loved it.
We had an Aprilia SR50 last year for my daughter that would do the job if it's all 30mph. It's a great bike but wasn't that keen about being stuck at 30. Insurance costs pennies. Don't forget the left lever is the brake because you'll s
t yourself if you grab it to change gear.

I'd be using a push bike for that distance tbh. Your still gonna get soaked and cold on a scooter. At least with push bike when you can't be arsed you can still take the car.
I was thinking of suggesting that too, but given the OPs hours, he might not want ot cycle 4 miles at, say, 3am? A scooter despatches that distance in no time.
Another option is an electric (push)bike? Via the Cycle To Work scheme, if available?

These go along at a fair lick and would nail 4 miles in minutes.
