looks good, but as always with these sort of competitions,

True.

And:

1) A holiday might be worth it (though nothing else)
2) Can't turn down the publicity
3) Perhpas they'll buy some more images....

Yes, OK. What was I thinking?

Aw - I know.

Actually I think my post came out a bit wrong... the was at me for contemplating the organisers would want to pay for pictures when they could get them for the price of a competition. Sadly it has to be a cheap way for organisations to get access to cheap pictures.

(And it sort of goes without saying that there are 137 pages of small print in the T&Cs. But I still entered an abstract of Wembley being built and a bit of a hackneyed Underground Train in motion......)

I would still be tempted to enter if I could. there's only a reson not to if you are pretty sure that you can sell the pictures, which is probably very unlikely TBH. And the T&C aren't too bad compared to some other competitions i've seen, in that they only get the rights if you win. I've seen a couple where you give up the rights just by entering

I've heard of a few people talking about the fact they can lose the rights to their pics when submitting to a competition.

I can see the issue if you are a pro and normally sell your pics for £££££'s, but what (if any) is the issue with average Joe sending pics in?

I can only see good things. Mainly recognition for your skills.

Maybe, but then again if your image is used in a huge global advertising campaign, what makes you think that you will get any recognition for that?

When have you ever seen a photographer credited for an image in an advert? They don't get credited, they get paid, and in a competition you don't even get that - in this case it's a prize, and whilst it's an ok prize it's not as good as money in the pocket!

Saying all that it wouldn't stop me from entering!

Cost of holiday to Namibia: £x
Cost of securing worldwide rights to 'pro' photo for all media for 5 years: £xxx

That's why they do it!

to be fair it does say in the T&C that you will be credited each time the image is used

Trying to get a job as a magazine photographer etc . . .

Portfolio and CV with non or few of your pics printed = £0

Portfolio, CV and pic used in international marketing campaign = ££££££

Going slightly away from the subject a little, how many pro's have offered a pic free or cheaply as a loss leader to get more work?

True, it's a win-win situation if you put it like that.
