Quite open, ideally automatic and something I can get my mountain bike in 😀

Balls to the automatic, get a clio 172/182.

You can get a downhill mtb plus pads and helmet in the back.

Mondeo because hatch and it will always sell.

Focus/ V50 estates better on fuel in auto guise because smaller/ lighter.

V70 will always sell, might be overkill, juicy too.

So how about you tell us mileage and frequency of use for the big space so we can narrow it down a bit?

I do about 15 miles a day so not heavy mileage and would really just be for commuting to work. Would like to get mountain bike in the back and also the dog!

Look away from the normal contenders & you can find some very worthy cars:

Mercedes C Coupe this will take your mountain bike with ease & are very reliable

Vauxhall Signum space to spare & an often overlooked car

Haggle & you should get close to your budget:

Toyota bB all day... there's a tidy grey one on the UK owners FB group at the moment for £1200.

1.5 yaris t sport engine, rear seats fold flat to creata van style loading bay. 4 speed auto with column shift... awesome cars.

I was going to buy it but the missus says owning two of the same car is a bit pointless.

Just get a petrol MK3 Mondeo

I hated myself as I was in a similar position and really didn't want to end up with a Mondeo

But £650 later I was the owner of a 54 plate MK3 Mondeo with 99k on the clock, full service history, 2 owners etc...

It's been brilliant, few hiccups but they are super easy to work on.
Had to service it myself - Cost me £25
EGR valve change, easy enough to do and only £20 for a new one off eBay.
Rear wheel bearing was a bit trickier as the 1 of the bolts had to be ground off to get it out but the £30 kit off the bay came with new bolts.

It's chain driven so no cam belt, does 35+mpg around town and 40+ on the motorway

I really want to hate it but have put 12k miles on it in just over a year with minimal maintenance and fuss.

Comfortable, huge boot and as a bonus you can park anywhere and not give a sh*t if someone scrapes it, dents it whatever, who cares! I think its only been washed twice since 2017.... biggrin
