Hi, first time in this section.

Son has a '54 Focus Zetec which he can't change the filter on as the thread on the engine side is damaged. Is this repairable/replaceable?

Thanks

Never experienced that, ever.v

Why, how did it get damaged?

Can clean threads with tap and die set, or thread files etc. Whether the threads are then good enough to keep filter secure, impossible to advise. Experienced hands and eyes needed really.

Suggest consult a local garage for advice..

Nothing wrong with diy, problems happen to experiened mechs too. The difference is knowing what to do, and how to get over such issues.

Thanks, its his first car bought from a friend. I advised him to get an oil and filter change. Forgot where he took it but they " discovered " it ?

In your situation I'd have a nagging suspicion that they were the ones who caused the problem, but I don't see how that could ever be proved.

They should be able to suggest options to fix it.

Given the inevitable doubt about whether they caused it, they might also be helpful about the price if you approach it constructively. Of course that won't happen if you take a hostile approach.

What engine is in the car? I'm guessing it's a mk1 Focus as I think the Mk2 was released slightly later. That still leaves a the possibility of 5 or 6 different engines, more if it's a crossover year and includes the Mk2.

That may just be the least definitive answer to a question ever.

It's not for me, it's for you. It's for you because it's you that needs the help. It's you that could have had an oil filter boss from the large spares collection in my workshop.

As it is you still haven't bothered to answer the question unfortunately. We know the capacity and the year. You can't be bothered to state whether it's a Mk1 or Mk2 Focus. You can't be bothered to state if it's petrol or diesel. You can't be bothered to state if it's a zetec-e or a sigma engine. All of these options are possible as Zetec could be referring to the spec of the car. I could rule out probably one of them without more information if I did a little research but why should I bother when you haven't. It's your problem not mine.

A little! But I’m sure many very knowledgeable and helpful people here feel like responding in a similar way every single day.

Best suggestion of the thread! I think it's going to be a garage job whatever the year/model. To be fair to the garage it's more likely that a previous owner has mashed the threads when tightening up than a garage trying to undo it. Any car of that age is open season for DIYers.

That 'clown', as you put it, knows what the problem is and was considering giving you the part you need to fix it. Given the attitude you're showing here I'll think twice about trying to help you in future.

The sad thing is that it’s probably a so called professional at a garage that has messed it up.

In my experience most diyers who bother to service a car do it properly.
