What would you value this at? Resto-mod Scrambler
Discussion
I wouldn’t normally ask for valuations, but I simply cannot get a feel for this bike.
I am going to look at a resto-mod type Scrambler bike that’s for sale fairly local to me, and the seller is asking £3200 o.n.o for it.
He has built it himself and just finished it, wants to move onto the next project.
The engine is Suzuki 400.
It’s been totally rebuilt, carbs cleaned, jetted, set up, all that kind of thing. Starts and runs perfect.
All new shocks, seat, paintwork, tyres, etc
But what is it worth?
I asked a couple of other bikers I know who said I would be mental to pay ‘more than a grand’ for it, and at £3k would be stuck with it forever.
I think it’s really cool, but it’ll be no doubt s
t to ride, and I cannot put a value on it.
Thoughts?

I think the easiest way to work out if it’s worth that money is what could you get for similar money.
IMO you’d get much better bikes for similar money.
Whilst that is true, when you get into classics and retro etc it doesn’t work.IMO you’d get much better bikes for similar money.
You could pay £30k for a brand new decent spec BMW 3 Series, which would be relatively fast, handle great, and do everything very well.
Or you could spend £30k buying a 1950’s MG TF, which would be absolutely f
king awful in every single respect. From my POV it's not worth the sum of it's parts.
With most bikes you make more by breaking them, that looks to have been built with cheaper components (look at the levers and rear shocks for example). Meaning breaking it you would earn less than the £3k price tag.
I wouldn't go near it but for you if you believe it's worth the money and you can't buy anything similar that floats your boat then only you can decide.

No lights or anything electrical makes me wonder about competence. While having no air box may look cool, it will probably affect the engine's performance and tractability. Also as said above cheap shocks and levers don't inspire much confidence. That being said if you like its worth what you are willing to pay.
Make sure you take someone with you to view.
In fact looking again, there is no ignition key or speedo I'm not sure I would even class that as finished. I take it, it has an MOT? Probably worth speaking to an insurance company also.

I shall update you as I’m going to see it tonight.
I tend to agree with what has been said in that it’s not worth £3k and is probably a £1500 bike that should be bought just for a bit of fun and not any form of serious motorcycling.
I just thought it looked pretty cool really, that’s the top and bottom of it. But being ‘cool’ doesn’t necessarily make something more valuable.

For when you have bought it ... https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Thanks for that thread!Joking aside, a few guys my age group (nearly 40 ish) who I’m friends with have expressed quite an interest in getting a bike licence for the first time in their lives, purely because of rise of ‘cool’ hipster style motorbikes.
Custom made old cafe racers, flat trackers, scramblers etc.
I was surprised myself the other day when I discovered entire businesses dedicated to supplying nothing but thousands of items of vintage/retro style bike clothing and helmets etc:

Soon business lunches will be at https://thebikeshed.cc/the-restaurant/
I really hope you don't pay £3k for that, for one thing there's hardly anything to it, the levers and shocks are cheap crap, as mentioned it should really have an airbox, the exhaust looks like an afterthought and I bet it cost no more than £500 to throw it together, if you do however I have some magic beans for sale.

It looks like it's made from a TS400, which are at least a grand even in ropey condition these days.
The engine casings don't look right, and isn't the TS a 2 stroke? That looks like a 4 stroke exhaust.Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
