As usual a segment of the program was dedicated to the brexit debate. Will Self was on the panel so I expected some forthright views from him.
Wasn’t disappointed, more very surprised when Self proclaimed that ‘those who voted leave were bigots and racists’. Mark Francois was sat next to Self and immeadiately called self out and demanded an immeadiate apology. Self declined and Francois again called for an apology. Self started squirming, unsurprisingly after insulting 17.4 million people in such derogatory terms. However, he still refused to apologise, the pair sat there literally staring in the eyes of each other for about one minute or more. That’s a long time in this context.
Why are remainers resorting to these insults when brexit is being debated? Government talks of bringing the Country back together!!

Didn’t Self say something like “most racists would have voted Brexit” as opposed to “those who voted Brexit were all racist”?

Which is slightly different to the way it’s being spun on social media and elsewhere.

Please oh please, can we not have an automatic rule that moves any post that mentions Brexit into the main thread? It's like an infection.

I've only seen that clip but I think the point Self is making is different to the one it's being claimed he made by Francois.

Ironic that Francois is so easily offended given his anti-German skit around Airbus but I guess that's different.

he said, 'all the racists et al' voted leave.

he didn't say 'everyone who voted leave is racist etc.'

the body language between the two after the comment was taut to say the least, will self would haven't fared well if it went physical.

I found the presence of the talent vacuum "Comedian and Campaigner" Grace Campbell on the other end of the panel a mystery. I wondered who she was and why she was on the show. So a quick google and......

she's Alistair Campbell's daughter.....that explains things.

He's got a track record of it, hes someone whos so stuck in his little echo chamber he's become delusional and sees anyone who disagrees with his higher that holy views are just racist nazis.

He may know some big words but to me he comes across as one of the thickest people I can think of when it comes to real world logical thinking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQghUuH5n2M&t=...

In the video he basically just calls Niall Ferguson a intolerant bigot he lives in a dream world.

Will Self said:
Your problem really Mark is not that you have to be a racist or an anti-Semite to vote for Brexit, it's just that every racist and anti-Semite in the country did.
The standard cowardly slur. Slasher would be proud. It's also patently ridiculous.

He also basically managed to say that he would have had perfectly good reasons to vote for Brexit but that leavers were only motivated by nationalistic (read racist) reasons. Such an egocentric wker.

Are they estranged? I assumed she was homeless.

He's a posh junkie with a big gob.

I'm baffled as to his fame and notoriety.

At the end of the clip I saw (posted on the Brexit thread), it did look as though it was all going to kick off.

I reckon Will Self could take Mark Francois with one hand! smile

Some of his writing is very good. The trick is locating it... smile

You are correct. It's not hard to see that and I agree that Francois and the OP have misrepresented this exchange. I love the way Francois says he's "offended". biglaugh

It's absolutely clear what Self said so it must mean that Francois and the OP are desperate to be offended and are either making it up, thick or deaf.

I didn’t realise remainers (or indeed leavers) spoke for one another?

With a title of “Politics Live” it shouldn’t be a surprise that this is a thread about Brexit. In which case no-one forced you to read it.

Violence is a tool of the ignorant, so you may be correct there.

I didn't hear Self say the words quoted by the OP. I didn't see Self squirm. There must be a different Politics Live on TV.

I live Self. I find him entertaining and he normally supports what he says with some clever logic. He's one of those people whom you do not have to agree with to be entertained by.
