4yr old diesel only 10k miles...
Discussion
Long story short... I’ve been looking at petrols but can’t find anything that works for me. Now considering diesels... possibly.
I’ve seen a 4yr old (jan2015) Hyundai Santa Fe. Usually low miles would be a bonus but 4 years old with only 9800miles. So now I’m wondering has the car been given a good enough run to clear the DPF.
Does the regen clear the DPF completely or could the damage already be done? I’m assuming the dealer isn’t going to let people test drive a dud car but could they clear it or fudge it enough so the car drives well for a 15 minute test drive and then bombs out on the 45 minute motorway drive home?

It’s a fairly reasonable question as to what state the dpf will be in!
FYI A replacement is about £500 roughly - genuine a bit more plus fitting which isn’t hideous!
It’s pretty unlikely the dealer would try and hide anything, to be honest they wouldn’t be that interested unless it was already flagging an error, if there was an problem they would probably force a regen as a starting point!
Are you going to be doing fairly frequent 60mph journeys, if so this will help clear the pipes!
I wouldn’t worry too much what’s the price?

Jan 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi Premium SE 5dr [7 Seats], 9802miles. On at £19,995. Pretty much topping out budget.
@strath44, this is my issue. As mentioned, mileage wise I should only be considering petrols but feel there isn’t much going that I fancy. Tucson T-GDI maybe being the one that comes close.
Daily commute is only 9.2miles (9 miles worth of 60mph+ roads). I could take the long route but it’s only 14.6miles (14miles worth of 60mph+ roads). I’m Northern Ireland based so the plus side is I’m 2 minutes from a motorway anywhere I go so if I had to do an extra 15 minute run down the M1, 2, 3 or 5 that’s not an issue. Weekends are dependant on what the wife tells me we are doing family wise but again if needed I could do a 40 mile motorway run, grab an ice cream with the kids and back again if needed.
Yearly mileage is approx 10k. Going by the Internet 10k doesn’t cut it for a diesel but is that due to DPF and engine issues or due to economy and fuel cost? Not overly concerned about mpg/fuel efficiency as I’m currently driving a 1.8 petrol that gets me 32mpg if I’m lucky so that will probably balance out in real world figures. Plus the wife just downsized to a 1.0T Petrol so technically that will help balance out any increase in diesel cost.
As mentioned I’m NI based so local selection is limited. There is an option to nip over to the motherland and pick something up but I’m not sure if that’s more hassle than it’s worth (or saving).
I’m looking something I can hang on to for 6/7+ years and that will work with the growing family, hence the 7seats or big boot space being a bonus.
Currently, I’m thinking it’s either going to be a TGDI Tucson or potentially a Santa Fe. Just never had a diesel and the unknown issues with my low mileage makes me doubt.
And I thought buying a new car would be fun!!!

I would be more worried about the high failure rates of the AWD system than the DPF. Both from experience, a local motor engineer who constantly has them coming in and also the main dealer parts department being very open and honest about it.
What about a Volvo XC90? They have 7 seats and a decent enough boot when all seats are up.

Hyundai have a five year warranty from new, used cars from their main dealers have a 1 year warranty. Either way you're covered, and after that you can take out an extended warranty. If it's from a Hyundai main dealer it will have gone through their multi-point check anyway.
Not all recent diesels have DPF 'problems', you could check the model/engine in a Hyundai forum.
Presumably it's Euro6 compliant to avoid forseeable LEZ taxes?
Downsides for a diesel are more expensive fuel per litre, offset by probable higher MPG, potential for future city-taxes or bans, slower to warm up in winter, sometimes more expensive long term servicing for cam-belt engines.
There are some really good buys in barely used diesels at the moment as DieselGate Fear bites and end of lease DERVs appear.
UK prices for a 2015 Santa Fe with 12K miles: about £19K. Road tax is about £250 in the UK.

Regebs turn the soot into ash, so they never completely clear - the ash builds up and eventually (usually around 100K miles) the dpf needs to be changed.Might be worth finding out how the system works on this model - most these days don't passive regen at all, they active regen on demand. So this business of "taking it for a run" is pointless, unless you get a few aborted regens and it throws up a warning light.
We had a 2015 brand new Santa Fe top spec model and ran it for 2 years with a 20 mile a day commute and the DPF light was almost continually on giving us little confidence in it. We took it to Hyundai and they don’t cover DPF’s under the warranty if you’re not doing the mileage. They also charge over £500 to get rid of the warning light. The mechanic told us the DPF in the Santa Fe is big as well so needs a lot of runs to clear it. We took it for runs and it wouldn’t clear or occasionally it would but came back very quickly.
A lot of those comments pretty much confirming my doubts about a diesel and my circumstances. Back to trying to find a petrol with enough zip to keep me sane.
Another slightly off topic question though... Is there any rumour to the idea that the new ref plates released will bring prices of used cars down? Or does it maybe just add a bit more selection to the used car pot once people pick up there new regs? I’m hoping there might be a bigger selection to choice from come the end of March/start of April?

What’s your requirements?
A good question and one that should be simple to answer but watch as I make it over complicated.Commute to work Monday to Friday 18mile round trip mainly dual carriageways. Car is parked in a work car park and I don’t go near it from 9am until leaving at 5pm so a 1.0T Petrol Astra or the likes would be more than enough.
I do have an executive style role which requires going to client meetings every now and then maybe 20mile round trip. Although not compulsory it’s always good to look semi-professional, que the stereotypical Audi A4, a 1.4TFSI Petrol would do the job.
Family life, 2 kids with prams, scooters, bikes and all the other kit that goes with 2 young kids. Camping and stay-cations are usual holidays so lots of soggy fields and dirty gravel campsites. 7 seats not a must but would come in handy from time to time when we are doing the family kids and cousins run around, currently needing 2 cars from time to time. So 5 seats needed minimum with decent size boot. Some would say a decent Mondeo or Insigna would do the job.
Now thats the ‘requirements’ if going with my head. If you had asked what would I ‘like’ going with my heart, I’d be saying I want a car that has all the bells and whistles from leather heated seats to Apple CarPlay, keyless entry and go, auto boot opening and all the cool safety tech from AEB to adaptive cruise control and suspension... A 5/7 year warranty would be lovely.
In terms of driving experience, I do enjoy a zippy run. Decent BHP and torque. I tend to get to spend limits as quick as possible and stick to them for as long as possible. Over taking and wht not within legal limits. I’d probably say I’m a bit of a lazy driver so if someone offered an auto box that was as good as a manual for matching my zippy nature I wouldn’t say no to that.
I’m not aligned to any particular marque or badge and I know my budget is going to rule out the higher end luxuries of a BMW or Audi SUV but I’d prefer not to go in the realms of Dacia’s and MG’s. Apologies if that offends anyone.
Preferably no older than 2017 and no more than 20k miles on the clock...
All this at £20k absolute max budget. Ideally closer to £17k but unless you a white bearded fat guy in a red suit I doubt that’s going to be possible!
So yeah again long story short I could probably get by with a Saloon or an estate but I’d much prefer a nice crossover or SUV.
Cars that I’ve been looking at include: Tucson, Sportage, Ateca and Kuga. Also the 3008 and Tiguan but there Petrol offering is limited within my budget.
