Why does XP...???
Discussion
Well, I could stop there really couldn't I? Why does XP?
Anyway, why does XP allow me to look at some folders with images in as "filmstrip" view (which is sometimes handy), but then deny this option on others?
I know I should probably RTFM, but is there something simple I'm missing?
Half a brain, perhaps?

Depending on how you have set your folder view up in Explorer, XP will select the view dependant on the type of files in the folder, i.e. if it's pictures you'll get thumbnails...
In Explorer goto Tools then Folder Options, click on the View tab, and it'll give you the option to change the way you view your folders.
You can set it to show all folders in the same way if you select the view type beforehand and then doing the above and pressing 'Apply to All Folders'.
I use Details all the time, unless looking at photos when I'll manually select the thumbnail view by right clicking anywhere within the explorer window selecting 'Arrange Icons by:' and then whatever I fancy.
Kapiche?

Right click on an empty space in the folder you want to change, then properties, then customize. There should be a list of options such as Video, music, pictures, etc. If you select pictures you'll be able to use filmstrip
Also all folders under the My Pictures folder can automatically be viewed using the Filmstrip view.
Windows also automatically assigns a pictures customisation to folders containing nothing but JPG/GIF image files, allowing you to go Filmstrip.

Doesn't always work. I have a downloads folder that used to be sorted as a documents (anything) folder and sorted by modified so the latest was always last. But it nows seems to have decided it's a music folder and I can't sort it like that anymore. Even after changing the folders properties to documents again, and applying it still only gives me music based sort options.
I really do hate XP.

Ah, perhaps I wasn't clear - the option isn't there when I look....
TO go filmstrip, you need to do it either from the button in the explorer window or from the right click context menu within explorer.

In which case, it's probably where I've opened files and shovelled in PSDs and TIFs that I'm subsequently wondering why I haven't got the 'strip option
It's to do with the "folders type" setting under customisation, which then determines whether you even have "filmstrip" in the view options (and it doesn't matter whether you go from menu or right click to hit the views dropdown).
I've learn't something new today! Cheers Chaps

Damn!
Consider me corrected...Wow. You learn something new every day... I had been wondering this very thing myself. My scanner software automatically creates a sub-folder in My Pictures for each calendar month (e.g. "2005-05 (May)" ) and the contents therein have the option for Filmstrip view.
Since I quite like this way of organising my photos etc., I manually create a similar folder for any months where I haven't used the scanner and was wondering why "filmstrip" wasn't an option for these...
Cool.
