In an ideal world I would buy a cheap chassis and build it up to a decent road/track spec

Would I then have any chance to sell it for a profit/break even If was able to finish the project keeping costs down with cheap (although good) labour/parts?

Anytime Ive built a track car for myself I've always regretted not buying a pre-built one as it always works out cheaper - with that said, looking at the new trend of modernizing retro cars (Singer etc) is there a chance now?

I presume auctions/ebay etc would be the way to start?

these 2 lines don't go hand in hand ! you want to make a profit, but already know buying one done is cheaper !

you will never make a profit on a 964/993 unless do you all the labour yourself.
cheaper to buy a minter now and hope prices still go up on them if the main aim is profit.

Have a look at the 9m 993 RSR evocation in classifieds. Lusso Prestige selling for owner who's on this forum. Doubt you'll find a better 993 track hack but its understandably not cheap as based on a crashed reshelled 993 RS. 993 C2S wide body shell used to reshell.

There's red 964 C2 911 Virgin have on their website which is sublime. In your shoes I'd just buy that and personalise the car a bit.

If you want to go further lightweight treatment and maybe go 3.8 or 4.0 via but really not needed.

The issue is that even beat up and damaged 964/993 costs a fair bit. Then you send to a Tuthill, 9m or whoever and its serious money again. Too rich for me best just to buy a mint car for £65k surely? You only live once though. Best of luck with the search wink

A friend recently sold a very tired LHD 964 C4. It had perhaps 250K miles, the front drive (and as a result no ABS?) had been disconnected due to an AWD issue, it had been badly repaired after a prang before he owned it, there were rust holes in the front wings, the interior was tired, the heating system just flooded the cabin with steam, the aircon hadn't worked in 15 years, the engine was tired and a bit smokey, the gearbox would need another rebuild at some point, etc etc. It was rough. But to my surprise someone paid £20K for it. Madness in my book. But it'll become someone's labour of love/money pit who apparently plans to restore it.

The red 964 C2 at 911Virgin looks superb......but at that cost and age I’d want to have seen a top end rebuild ........

I would take the red 993 on there and pocket the 10K change. I see 911 & Porsche World have a big 993 feature this month to celebrate 25 years of the 993.
