So I've recently brought this 2004 320d

However sometimes there's no power when I accelerate.

Best way to describe it is that it feels like it goes into limp mode.
I can be driving and all of sudden I'll have no power with my foot to the floor. It eventually kicks back into life and goes.

I have noticed though when i do put my foot down I hear a weird sound when i get no turbo power and it sounds like it's like a belt slipping kind of noise? If that makes any sense.

Again the power comes and goes when the car feels like it.

I havnt noticed any black smoke coming from the exhaust however at night when i have cars behind me with their lights on I do see smoke. But I don't see it during daylight.

When the turbo or whatever it is which isn't working then works she pulls like a train. I just don't know what it can be. There are no dashboard lights on.
Please help

I could sit here and say it sounds like this or that but, really, your best bet is to take it to a decent garage and ask for a diagnostic.

I just wanna know if it's common or if sounds like it could be the turbo that's buggered.

OP, doesn't sound like the turbo, that would be more consistent in it's behaviour.

Do you have a code reader? Just because the EML light is not on, doesn't mean that there are no error codes being thrown.

A suggestion on another forum is to disconnect the MAF sensor and take it for a drive, see if that makes any difference.

MAF Sensor is just after the air intake box and you can disconnect the plug easily enough.

A 2004 320d (6 speed) will have a turbo with the electronic actuator - this could be the issue but proper diagnostics is the only way forward.

I hope you can get it diagnosed and fixed fairly economically OP.

I had a 2004 320td for 3 years and it was a great car.

Check all boost hoses and intercooler for leaks. Change all vacuum pipes for silicon ones. This will cost around £5.

If it doesn’t fix it, then it’s diagnosis time.
