I managed to get the fuel pump off of my mk1 LT40, fixed a dodgy seal and the pump is back on. Hooray!

It started up beautifully on the first attempt,

But then.... a terrible knocking.

I checked the timing marks and they seemed to have been a few mm out, I think I may not have tightened up the crankshaft pulley enough.

I have lined up all marks and moved the gear and it is better, but still knocking, nowhere near as badly mind, and not revving up enough.

I am not sure what to do next, everything seems to be lined up.

However, on the flywheel there are two marks about 1.5cm apart, one is simply a line, the other is a line with a 0 or balloon shape on the end, looks like a lollipop. I assumed this was the tdc mark. The other line mark is after it on the flywheel. What is that second line mark for?

The pump and pump housing and pump pulley marks are all lined up when the nodule on the flywheel is lined up with the lollipop. So I am stumped. Any suggestions?

Is it a diesel pump and is it a new one?

Some pumps have a little grub screw that needs removing depending on what type pipework they will used on.

Single or twin pipe system basically.

Hi thanks - no it an an old Bosch VE6 pump, no grubbing screw that I am aware of. Certainly didn't see one when I took it off. Thanks

Hi, it was like the knocking sound you get when you use Easy Start.

It's not really knocking any more, but running a bit juddery and lumpy.

Go find an LT40 engine manual and read it would be a great start.

I'm long past reading the engine manual thanks. Probably read the original manual half a dozen times now and it doesn't answer this question./

There's a website called Club 80-90. Not been on there for a while but it's dedicated to VW van/campers from that era. Used to be an LT thread running and some fairly well informed people on there.
