Hi if I purchase some of the above shares would I be eligible for the dividend this month.

Not very clued up I've read the ex dividend date is 14.2.19 does this mean needed to have bought in before this date to get the March dividend?

Apologies if it seems a stupid question

You have answered your own question - the shares went ex dividend in Feb so no, you will not get the dividend if you bought now - the timetable for the rest if the year is here:

If buying online, beware of the Norwegian prince email scam.

Eh? How is that a 'prince email scam'? And why does buying online make any difference?

Its simply reporting that the Norwegian national fund is divesting its oil stocks, which it is. Although it's more complicated than that, because Shell are investing heavily into electricity and renewable generation and so it is confusing if it will get sold. Candidates like Tullow and Premier are much more likely to go first.

We inherited some of each.
Is there any difference between them? What are the advantages,if any, of one over the other?

Difference is currency and tax treatment of dividend. Buy the B if you are Uk based.

RDSA is the dutch arm of shell.
RDSB is the uk arm of shell which is the one you want to buy.
If you need any advice drop me a line I may be able to help.
I have had shares in RDSB for years I must say they are one of the best shares I have ever owned.

Probably going to be a bonus for firms like Shell rather than a hurdle. They don’t make much profit from retail forecourts in contrast to what they make from exploration, extraction and selling ahead of refining. If the whole world switched to EVs (which it won’t, only a few countries are actually aiming to have any kind of significant EV usage) then oil is still required for global industry. It’s the lighter oils that tend to be favoured for transport so it is how an explorer is weighted towards these and Shell isn’t overweight. If all cars were EVs today then we would need around 40% less oil which means most of the expensive extraction zones such as shale and deep water would close so it’s the more speculative firms that are over invested in those areas that will go under.

In addition, the likes of Shell make next to nothing from flogging petrol and diesel by the gallon to retail consumers. However both Shell and BP bought two of the largest EV charging companies last year and are doing land deals with supermarkets, retail outlets and car park owners to stake significant claims in the non domestic EV charging infrastructure that would be needed should EVs gain sales traction in the wider market.

So in short, Shell will probably make more profit from the UK if it were all EV than the tiny amounts they currently make selling petrol and diesel so the UK going all EV is good for them but even if they just shut up retail shop in the UK the accountants wouldn’t even notice any change to the bottom line.

Besides, EVs are only showing any kind of sales volumes in a handful of places around the world and only where there are massive tax incentives available so dominant EV penetration isn’t really any kind of impending threat.

Still lots of oil powered power stations in the world - likely more if all cars have to be plugged in over night. I don't think Shell is going anywhere just yet..

Very few oil powered power stations!

Shell have ambitions to be one of the largest electricity companies in the world by 2025 or whatever it is. They're buying up firms across the world which are involved in battery storage, renewables etc.
