I regularly look at the pictures on this forum but never post because, quite frankly, mine are rubbish! I remember a few different people put various styles of frames around their photos though. I've been trying to search for some explanations as to the best way of doing this, but to no avail.

Could anyone point me in the right direction, or make any suggestions? Thank you very much.

I would increase the canvas size and use the paintbucket tool to fill the new area with a colour of my choice.

or set the background to the colour of your choice then when you increase the canvas size it will already be done

I just drag mine on to a larger canvas that has been coloured then use stroke on the image layer.

I don't believe you...

...and this is not some elitist forum where people judge you and look down on you because you a) don't have the latest gear or b) don't post pictures that make the grade in some local camera club where the average age of the members is higher than there average IQ

Impossible. You have a Canon; you will have to think of a better way than me otherwise you'll jeopardise your smug rating

I use PS actions to do my borders,

I have an action set up that adds a 2pixel white border then a larger black border.

The way I do my borders is to set the bg colour to white and then goto canvas size, increase its width and height by 2px. Then swap the bg colour to black and do the same with what ever size you want the main border to be, e.g. 26px.

Then once u have the action you can just run it on each image.

To set up an action open the action panel and click record (the little red circle at bottom of panel) go through the process of adding a border. PS will save this and then you can select your action and click play for each image.

if you're making an action like this it is useful to include instructions to reset the background/foreground colours at the start so you don't have to worry about getting a red border (or whatever colour you had selected when you press play). the key for doing this is D, then X to swap back/foreground

Thanks for the suggestions. Will go and have a play and see what I can get to look good. Who knows, maybe I'll get brave enough to post one of them soon!

Stuart,
That's fine if you're doing full frame every time, but not if you're cropping images. And it's no good if, like me, you like to take a colour from the picture for the border.(See example)

Martin.
