from memory with my cavalier, if it were valve stem seals do you mean? the oil leaks past them and collects on the pistons then you'd get the puff of smoke when you start the car then clears I believe? I've also heard that if oil breather hoses are blocked you can chuck out blue smoke but im sure I'll be corrected with that one. if its head gasket you need to check coolant levels too I think

Where did you bring it from? And what year is it? 1984 or 2008?

no such thing as a private trader...

if it's a trader, take it back. if it's a private individual, take it to a garage...

Try the trading standards office in the morning - they might have more success getting hold of him.

2006 is an N46 engined car, so it will have worn rings and and stem seals. They're all shagged out smokers at that age so just keep adding oil and run it till it dies. You could try backing it, but good luck with that.

Yes, do this, and citizens Advice Bureau may also prove helpful.

When buying from a professional car dealer, the buyer's rights to a refund in the first 30 days are quite generous (commensurate with amount paid! - if you got this car for £100, for example, then you won't have much of a leg to stand on). Though I have no idea how likely it is you will actually get your money back.

If he is a trader you will have a receipt with all of his details on it, this will also set out any terms & conditions of sale such as "sold as seen" that may affect your rights.

Either way as a trader he is legally bound to not sell a lemon, or at least to sort it out to your satisfaction, so you have got the weight of the law behind you.

See trading standards, but I would also mean while write him a letter detailing the faults & setting out what you want him to do about it, keep it professional/calm etc, send it to him "signed for" and keep a copy.

ETA. What you describe sounds like either oil breather full/blocked or piston rings.

I have to ask, why are you driving it?

I thought you wanted them to fix it/take it back.

The more miles you put on it, the weaker your case for regress is.

Cam cover gasket, vac pump seal and breather all need changing. A good afternoon's labour and @£100 in parts.
