Engine replacement!! Help please!!!
Discussion
Hi, so I bought a my first BMW and the engine has seized and I need a new engine. My car is, BMW 318i e90 2007. My engine code is N46B20U1. The Garage have said to get a 2nd hand engine and they will put a new timing kit on and install it but they won't supply engine. I've looked on various site for engines and not many will give out info on donor cars, is this normal?
I'm also struggling with making sure I buy the right engine, reading stuff about ECUs needed changing as well as scared me as already looking at 1.6k. So I have a few questions and hope someone/ppl may be able to help with...
1- Can I put a N46B202 into this without changing the ECU ect?
2- What engines have the same ecu's thus not needing to change mine over.
3- recommend bmw breakers/ recon engine suppliers.
Thanks

N46's are potentially dogs
t regardless of mileage. Mileage means nothing, it's either a good one or it's not. Yes it will need a timing chain kit as well as oil filter housing and cam cover gaskets as well as vanos solenoid O rings.
The 2.0 N46 from the E46 will fit - so will a 2.0 N42 for that matter. Quarry and similar breakers will sell an engine 'bare' - no loom, no manifolds, flywheel, starter or alternator. The E46 bare engine is identical to an E90, same sump, block, head etc. E46 flywheels are different. You're effectively swapping the loom and ancillaries from your old engine to the replacement.
You should be able to pick one of these up for £350 - E90's with this engine aren't worth a lot now.

Here we are, £299 and he'll take a bid on it:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-1-3-Series-e87-e90-...
318i and 320i engines are virtually the same 2.0 units btw; the power difference was down to the ECU and manifolds iirc. The 320i exhaust cam is slightly different but nothing major.
Beware 1.8 units for the E46 316i.

It's been a nightmare. Ive spoken to quarry motors but they wouldn't give any information about the donor cars out which I found strange. Thanks for your in put.
What information are you trying to get from them? iSore said:

Thank you for your input. I've located a engine the same as mine so am hopeful of just doing a straight bare engine swap. I'm in the hands of my garage at this stage. Wish me luck https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-1-3-Series-e87-e90-...
