Am I alone in feeling that we have lost a lot of what we had in the past with car hifi. I love the warm analogue sound of my old Radiomobile 8 track. The cassettes from the 1960s still play beautifully as do the ordinary cassettes from the 1970s and 1980s.
My modern CDs nearly all have a glitch somewhere which I find even more irritating than a scratch on my old vinyl records. The controls are nearly always too confusing to use whilst driving.
The thing I miss most is my old Audioline cassette player which had a record button so that I could record anything off the radio as I was going along by just pushing one simple button I must have hours of tapes made up from this.
Here is a sample of my latest earworm, taken off the radio in the late 1980s. ZZ Birmingham, John Henry. So this was recorded in a live interview on a radio program and put on a cassette which I discovered thirty years later, recorded again on my phone in the garage and then uploaded onto youtube. Still sounds ok considering the potential losses in sound quality !

Good luck with the search, and the search for somewhere to put them. I spent ages looking around for some speakers I could use in the TR that were not to be located either side of the transmission tunnel, which I think is a daft place for them (albeit the only practical place). There was nothing off sufficiently small depth or diameter to fit anywhere else, which given the current state of speaker design I found quite surprising.Any ideas for the correct speakers for this car
So I'll just listen out for things going wrong with the car instead.

I like to have a different type of period correct headunit in each of my cars, so far I have, LW/MW push button radio, 8-Track, cassette, CD, MiniDisc headunit with CD changer and Bluetooth although that's too modern to really count towards what I'm trying to achieve.

I was at a disposal sale at a local car dismantler a few years back, they had a pallet of Chrysler-branded eight-track players there, and I know a lot of the stock was being bought up by autojumblers. I see a couple of stands at Tatton Park show with them - one is more the immaculate restored car stereos, perhaps with Aux-in conversions, the other is just older stereos that he's fixed up. Both usually have a box of eight-track cartridges to rummage though - I always look as there's one with a photo of my car (well, a car like mine) on the front that I'd like to get.Thanks droop - came away from the NEC sans 8-track player unfortunately, I made the mistake of spending most of my budget for the day on other bits 'n' bobs before reaching the vintage hi-fi chap's stand, cheapest player he had for sale was £115 though! He had some nice period speakers too.

I was employed as a audio installer from 72 for a few years . We were attached to a Chrysler dealers but opposite was a sister garage who were Jaguar Rover Triumph and Land Rover dealers , we also did work for all the various dealers in the Beds, Bucks , Cambs and Herts area .
Usually radios , 8 tracks or cassettes and occasionally a full quadraphonic system .
All pre din fittings and fitted wiring systems .
Many certainly sounded better than many modern systems but in comparative terms they were very expensive .
We were Radiomobile , Motorola, Javelin and Hitachi main dealers .

Two lads borrowed my MG Midget to take to Goodwood and very kindly installed a Pioneer player which I am obviously too old, blind and stupid to useThe buttons are so small and there is no obvious on off so if you hit another button by mistake you end up in another mode and what I thought was the volume control is not what it seems
Who needs fifty stations, if you have a car with a decent engine/exhaust noise you will never hear anything apart from radio 4 anyway!

Get yourself out to some bootsales, just this morning I saw a large box of 8 track tapes, I think the guy wanted £5 for about 30 of them. I do a lot of boot sales and they are a regular sight.eccles said:

Radiomobile for me and I found all the tapes on eBay. Still plenty on there.
Also found an eight track recorder an Akai CR81D and eight track blank cassettes still in their plastic wrapper
