Jaguar x type 2005 with only 650 miles !

Hi, my neighbour has an x type diesel sitting on his drive since new,it has not moved since 2010. It has only 650 miles on the clock basically mot miles. I think he might sell it to me but what I realistically need to do to recommission it ? Any replies would be appreciated.

9 years is a long time

Check the sills for rot

Tyres
Brake pipes
Oil
Brake fluid
Battery

I could go on!

Wheel bearings hate being sat, so likely they'll need replacing

Tyres will be shot, brakes likely seized, all fluids will need a flush, will be surprised if bushes/mounts/hoses haven't perished and gone brittle. You may find it fires up and runs okay, then the rubber bits start to disintegrate as they are brittle and asked to go into service again.

That's pretty crazy that he's let that happen! What sort of condition is it in at a glance? I'd maybe replace the tyres and all fluids/filters and take it from there - you might need to empty all the old diesel out? Not sure.

Thanks for the replies, the car looks beautiful from the outside, the brakes look rusty and the tyres are shot. He told me after he bought the car he didn’t like it so asked the dealer to buy it back ! but the dealer offered him only 9000 when he had paid 24000 for it. He’s been driving all these years in an old van while the car sat unused on his driveway. I think I might offer him £1000 for it , take it or leave it. I am recently retired and fancy recommissioning it myself.

Realistically it's worth what someone will pay and the X type isn't in great demand as an enthusiasts car. Your £1000 is probably about right when it could swallow that again fairly easily in consumables.

That said, I had an X-type myself a few years back (bought at 3 years old with 90k!) and it was a great car which I enjoyed. Mine was a 2.0d estate in sport trim, fairly lowly spec but it looked good dechromed and had lovely seats.

I bought a Mitsubishi GTO that had stood outside on Hayling island for 9 years. I had to replace tyres, fuel pump, fuel tank, injectors and battery. It actually fired up on his drive after chucking a battery in and swapping fuel pump out (30min job), and ran on the 9 year old stale junk in the tank !!

Everything else was spot on and it sailed through an MOT too, no perished belts or hoses etc. You could be as lucky as me and not all cars that stand for ages require a mini resto to get running again.
