Hi All, I’m sure there have been lots of this type of question so apologies if this is a repeat.
The MOT on my 68 Mustang ran out last week. Normally at this time of year I run it down to my local MOT tester and get a fresh ticket.
However with the new rules I’m planning to get the exemption. I’m still intending to have it checked over by the same garage but not an official MOT.
Looking at the form to do this (V112) everything looks straight forward except it says “to produce the form at the post office the next time you tax the car”.
So the question I have is my tax is not due until June so between now and then do I just use the car with no MOT? Can I just take this form today to the Post Office or does it have to be done when I tax it?
I’m sure one of you chaps out there has been through this.

is the tax due? on the v5 is it classifies as historic?
Assuming no to both of those questions, when the tax is due, take the v5 to the PO. They will tax it foc. They will retain part of the v5 and return it to DVLA. DVLA will send it back to you with the classification as historic. when you tax it next time foc, do it on line and there is a tick box for you to claim mot exemption.

its already taxed as a historic so tax is foc its the mot classification I'm talking about. The form simply says to take it when I next tax the car. I appreciate its free but I still have to apply for the tax. I normally do it online.

You don't have to do anything then until the tax expires. Then re tax it online when due and tick the box for mot exemption.
If you sorn it it takes DVLA's computer a week or so to show online as sorn. During that week you will not be able to re tax it online or tick the mot exempt box. So as at the DVLA it will be sorn on there computer as soon as you do it, the week lag for it to catch up online means you wouldn't be able to drive for that week. However, that also works in reverse. When you retax it it will show as taxed and mot exempt at the DVLA but not for another week online.
Basically online is a week behind DVLA computer which ever way your doing it.
